Building a 13th C Chateau in 21st C Burgundy

This is a remarkable story of dedication, involving the building of a “new” 13th century Chateau, using traditional materials and methods, albeit with 21st century health and safety rules! Chateau de Guédelon is being built in Burgundy….

Someone told us about this place when we were travelling a couple of years ago. It sounds fascinating - such skills.

I’ve been following the construction for a long time. I visit every few years so I can appreciate the progress. It really is a wonderful venture.

Yes, us too. It’s got a bit more Disney land as it has progressed but we love the attention to authentic methods and detail.

I like the fact that they have discovered unexpected raw materials on site. All the clay they need has come from their grounds. They hadn’t expected that at all. It is a bit too touristy but that is easy to understand, and I think the visitors must find it a very educational visit.

They need the money though to keep it going, I would imagine.

Just over an hour’s drive from us, if any of you are in the area you’re welcome to pop in and have a cuppa or a glass of something refreshing.

2 hours from us. If we go, I’ll be sure to drop in.

I would love to read about this but I refuse to pay to read the Guardian on line or accept all their advertising cookies and the video is “not available in your area”. (I am in England atm)

Personally if it doesn’t reach modern building and insulation levels it shouldn’t be built. I can’t flout the rules, neither should they. There are plenty of old chateau they could rebuild, possibly into HMO’s as we British have taken all the others

Look on YouTube, there are a lot of videos in both English and French.

That’s the beauty of archeology, modern rules don’t count.

It’s not a house for people to live in! Think of it more as a research project looking at low energy building techniques. The last time we visited it was fun watching kids be fascinated by traditional techniques - maybe one day they will remember that and go for simple techniques.

Bits of our house have been painted used pigments we bought from Guédelon (and milk powder)

Even more pointless then, go restore some of the others, don’t just rely on the British to fix them up, quite a few of whom do a terrible job

Have you read about the project at all? It sounds as if you think it is something completely different from what it is. Damn sight less pointless than a TV spin off theme park.

You seem to have missed the point completely.

Don’t post about a housing shortage when they build vanity projects.

Thank you for that Emoji

Who is they? This is a private project.
