Buying glass (no longer)seems much more difficult than it used to

I’ve repaired a few windows over the years with glass I bought cut-to-size from the local Mr Bricolage.
Today, I finally got around to dealing with a pane that cracked during a Spring hail storm. It’s a very old window with single-glazed 4mm glass. I measured it - 370mmx 380mm - and presented myself at the wood and glass cutting counter.

But things have changed. Apparently they will no longer cut glass to order without a devis. So they took my details and will arrange for a glazier to contact me, visit and measure up. He will then issue a devis which I can take to Mr B who will then fulfill my order at a cost that covers the glass, the measuring process and the glazier’s time. Probably - ooh, 5 times the cost of the glass alone?

Is this because of a change in the law? Are individuals now unable to buy glass without a devis? Or are Mr B in league with the League of Unnecessary Glaziers?

No idea about Mr B… but our local Quincaillerie cuts glass to the size requested.

We had to replace a cracked glass in our woodburner and had no problems… just told that it would not be cheap, as I discussed the heat resistance properties blah blah…

watched him cut the glass, wrap it for us… then he told us the cost and we meekly paid up. Excellent service.

Bricomarché in Bellac did a whole load for me a few months back while I waited. Well, i went next door and did some shopping while I waited :joy: But they were good and fast and accurate so if you want an alternative to consider, you have my review lol.

That’s, @kirsteastevenson . Rather than trying Lussac I’ll probably just go to Bellac tomorrow, measurements in hand…

I have to get a couple more done for my garage, so I’m hoping this isn’t some new rule or I’ll be kicking myself that I didn’t get them when I got the others! I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed you have a successful trip!

Intermarché came up trumps. Cut while I waited and service with a smile rather than a shrug!
Recommended, will buy again etc etc…

Glad it worked out, and without you having to take out a mortgage and endure a 3 year long bureaucratic nightmare just to get a small pane of glass!:joy:

That must be a right pane.

Shops/services will vary, across the country… but when one finds a “good” shop… stick with it !

I would have just glazed over at the thought of their scam.
