My wife is Irish and should have her passport (taken nearly a year so far) so I should not need a visa if the information I’ve been reading is correct. But I do need 3 months private health insurance. Thanks for the information anyway
I suggest that she follows to application up Geoffrey, Irish passports are normally issued in around six weeks. She should also get the handily sized passport card.
That may have been the case a few years ago but this year they’ve been totally overwhelmed by the shear volume of applications and the lockdowns in Ireland haven’t helped so they admitted there was a 5 months backlog. We also made a bad mistake in thinking the application would be simpler if Mary used her maiden name, but apparently the UK and Irish passports must have same name! So after 4 months Mary’s application went to the back of the queue.
Send an email to Simon Coveney’s office Geoffrey explaining that you’ve been waiting so long, which is really unacceptable. I’m sure they will respond and they will speed her application up. I seem to remember reading the logjam was in printing (as in staffing the printing centre) , not in processing as that can be done from home.
I think you will both need health insurance of possibly more than 3 months. Even EU citizens need to have some form of insurance on arrival, and once you have been here 3 months and make the CPAM application it can take months for everything to be processed. It may be as you have existing social security numbers it will be fats for you, but don’t bank on it….
Thanks John but we seem to be on the home straight now. Pity we hadn’t been in touch with you earlier. What really puzzled us was the length of time it took to scan the requested documents. They had Mary’s UK passport for 4 weeks and we had to request it back as she needed it. But much later she was told it hadn’t been scanned so she had to send it back!

I’m not sure so do check….12 months health insurance doesn’t seem to be one of the documents required for your visa application (as it is for other visas) so maybe not. But you don’t want to be without cover!

Not sure which thread to post the following but I think the topic title about sums it up.
My son and daughter in law are on the front line dealing with patients every day. They wear full ppe and are tested more than once a day.
Someone they know openly boasts they haven’t had the vaccine, and she is pregnant. To get around testing she submits the result of a lateral flow test, which she doesn’t take, informs it is negative and voila, she can go anywhere that a negative test is needed.
Not being vaccinated is selfish in the extreme to her, her unborn child and all those she comes in contact with.
How do these people live with themselves?
Is it any wonder covid spreads like wildfire.
And finally, My son had a positive lateral flow test this morning and is now awaiting the results of both him and daughter in laws PCR test. If positive that is 2 front line staff who cannot fight the virus sufferers for 10 days one of which may well be thier cheating lying friend.

I think we maybe live in different worlds and I hope this isn’t insurmountable with continuing dialogue….
In my world we would never think to harm any children in any way….it’s unthinkable…but these mandates are harming children who are not at any risk….
My unvaccinated daughter also worked in healthcare…tested regularly always negative….she just gave birth at home and is breastfeeding and is currently on maternity leave….

With all due respect to you Helen and in the most caring way I need to point out that this woman, in her little anschluss outfit, has more in common with the Nazis than any MEP I’ve seen so far. We had dinner with a friend of ours this evening and he was telling us about his ex wife and her sister, both homeopathic types. They didn’t believe in the vaccine. Both are in hospital for the last two weeks with Covid, one on ventilation for the last ten days.
As he said, and I quote him directly “fuck them, taking up beds and ICU space that people with other illnesses could have used”. I think he is right.
The party is over Helen, the time for debate is at an end. Anti Vaxers are killing other people. This is not a joke, this is about lives. Now I don’t care what you think, I don’t care what garbage you have read on social media, I just I don’t want people like you within kilometre of me or mine.

To add, my son tested positive today and will not be able to work on the front line with his patients. If you turn up at A&E wanting treatment and there is no one to care for you, Tough.

To be honest John, much as I am against any for of censorship, I think maybe we should shut down this bullshit debate? Even discussing it give a smidgen of credibility to the idiotic anti vax arguments. There are a lot other fora (Facebook, etc.) people can argue and reenforce their idiotic anti vax theories on. Should we be giving this bullshit another platform?
