Canicule, June 2025

It’s already been well over 40 in the sun here for a couple of days. I woke at 5.22am this morning and instead of trying to get back to sleep as I would usually I got up and got out in the garden early. I’m going to do that while this continues, although annoyingly have work tomorrow during the cool of the morning! My mum is currently doing a tour in Greece and they are melting!

yep, we do whatever… as early as possible. The air was 18c outside at 6am so I flung windows wide.

In the East-facing deepest shade outside our house it is currently 34c… the temperature in the sun is so hot, it feels as if I can’t breathe… so I’ve just done a quick flick to grab the laundry (rock hard and well cooked)

Yep that is where our outdoor thermometer is as well and it’s 31.5 here.

Just back from our Notaires office. The car was registering 36.5. The Notaires office was air conditioned…bit of a shock when we stepped outside again!

33C In Sud-Vienne right now (7pm) and it’s due to hit 35-36C tomorrow afternoon before backing off a bit.

Same here. We were out very early, mowed the lawns, pruned, dug out some rosabell potatoes (delicious BTW), sorted out the wood pile etc. etc. done by 10.30am when it was 28 C. Now, what do we do with the rest of the day ? I sorted out a holiday in Bruges with my brother and his son, had the rev clim serviced (it works a bit better now) and at 12h decided to relax.

Max temp down my way is forecast to be 35°C today and tomorrow, but feeling more like 40°C according to the forecast. Coming days cooler.

Yesterday was hot, and bearable. Woke this morning to a bedroom temp of 25°C around 6am – hadn’t opened the windows wide enough! Big floor mounted remote-controlled fan was much appreciated.

We sadly can’t sleep with our windows open since the &%#&-+ neighbours moved in with their dogs (yes same Ines that kill my chickens) as they bark at all hours.

Neighbours! Before moving to France and living in London in a terraced house I decided to move because I couldn’t bear living next door to new very noisy neighbours. In those days property and mortgages were easily available and commensurate with income.

My house here in France is detached and far enough away from any potential nuisance neighbours. Sorry about your predicament.

Although we are not in the danger area, it is very hot and climbing until Sunday evening when we are forecast a big storm.

Anybody going to Hellfest in Clisson tomorrow? 39C- aptly named…

When it gets above 30c Stuart and I stay in the cool front room with the cats and watch a matinee in the afternoon. We have plenty to drink and bowls of sorbet are very welcome. Then when it gets a bit cooler in the evening we finish any outdoor jobs we started earlier in the day.
We’re never satisfied are we - when it’s cold we want it to be a bit warmer. When it’s hot, we want it to be cooler, when it’s dry we want it to rain and when we’ve had days and days of rain, we just want it to stop.
Enjoy whatever you’ve decided to do in this heat but keep yourself hydrated (no alcohol!) and make sure your animals are comfortable.

Thought about it but it was sold out.

33c here this afternoon, sounds quite cool by the sound of some of your replies. Just back from the decheterie which was closed pm due to canicule, now another new word to the vocab.

It was way too hot to be installing a bathroom today ……… but it had to be done!

Did you send tem a bill for each chicken? I’d be looking to if they are generally objecttionabĺe.

We’re due 38 C here today and I have to go outside to the south facing side of the house to fix our patio door shutter which is broken. I may go out in about an hour or so before it really heats up.

Touches 36C in the shade down here in Le Sud these days and not currently cooling below 20C at night

The fun thing is my SIL and husband making their annual trip to France invited themselves to stay 3 days in our oven hot guest room next week.
