Can't get foobar to work

I usually play my music (MP3 or FLAC) through the PC using foobar. But when I tried to play something just now, I got this playback error message :

Does anyone have any idea on what’s gone wrong with the programme, please. I can play my music through anything else (Media Player/Power DVD/VLC) but not foobar.

Can other programs play audio?

Have you tried removing and reinstalling foobar?

Probably not called fubar for no reason

Thanks Billy. Stuart here - Yes, other programmes can play audio and no I haven’t tried removing and reinstalling foobar yet - one reason is that I’ve got a lot of add-ons for our Mission Connect Sound system and I didn’t want to upset that but maybe if I uninstalled it, I would hope it would just remove the programme and leave the add-ons behind. Do you know if that would be the case?

The catch is that you don’t know what “driver” won’t initialise.

As an aside it has been a pet peeve of mine for years that error messages spring from the bowels of the program with nop indication whence they came (my “favourite” is a Windows pop up that said simply “the parameter is wrong”. To be fair I’ve written error handling libraries and it is extraordinarily difficult to come up with a structure that delivers sensible user actionable messages - you either get “the parameter is wrong” or you get only-useful-if-you-have-source-code stack traces with microscopic detail.

Sadly not (know that is) - if they show up separately in the list of things that can be added and removed I would assume they would stay as the Windows installer doesn’t do dependency tracking as far as I know.

You might be able to copy the Addons or plugins folder somewhere safe and then put it back after reinstalling (he says, hopefully)?

Thanks for that @RicePudding - useful information. I (Stuart) will definitely give it a go and report back.
