I made an appointment with an opthalmologist who is also a surgeon. I had to wait, but she operated on both eyes with a short wait in between. A marvel of sight and colour.
You are so lucky.
Following a rdv with Specsavers it was recommended that l should have a cataract dealt with before buying specs. When I returned home I made rdv with my mt. This was two weeks ago, she got the receptionist to get me an appointment with an ophthalmologist and I will see them on the 24th of this month. This is in Correze.
Ditto, I thought this was the norm, obviously not.
Well, I’m in the depth of the countryside near Agen where there is a good hospital. I made the optha appt myself by going to the clinique and finding one who would take me on. I waited 3/4 months before she could see me… and then she did the cateracts for me. My MT is not sympathetic really but here we lack doctors so one takes what is possible. I was told where to go by a taxi driver who lives nearby!
I live in Beaune 21 and I have to travel to Chalon-sur-Saône or Dijon. There are only two opthamologist, and neither one is a surgeon, unfortunately. The waiting time is horrendous. But, what can we do?
Same with me, chief eye surgeon also in charge of the cabinet - cut out any middle men i.e. MT’s.
I had mine done in Dijon CHU. The initial consultation took place in the 7th circle of hell - a long windowless corridor at the height of the canicule, packed with more people than seats, and being called into different rooms for the the different tests meaning you lost your chair and had then to find another. However the surgeon was good, the machinery was up to date, and the operation process v smooth. I was having an epi-retinal membrane removed as well as a cataract and it was fine. We live 2 hours away so I spent the night after in the maison des familles to save my OH having to spend all day waiting.
OMG, I will go to Chalon to St Marie hospital, I believe it is good ![]()

The surgeon was top notch - just the conditions for consultations were medieval! But only a month delay from referral and then op just 2 weeks later.
So not too bad then, pleased it was a success.
The worst thing about it all is the fear of the unknown and having seen too many horror films! I’m a huge wuss but it was not as bad as I had imagined especially around the eyes themselves bit. You will be fine but expect to twice shower at home with Betadine, strip off and wear disposable pyjamas and foot coverings and have monitor pads stuck to you, the french hospitals are very germ phobic unlike the UK where my sister did not even remove her jacket or shoes and walked in off the pavement without any prior sterilising shower etc.
