Cataracts Advice SVP

Bon jour les tous. I think I might be developing cataracts. In the UK the optician tells you. In France. Do I see an optician? An optometrist (what’s the diff/) or an opthalmologist? Merci bien

Optho will be able to tell you, but the rdv time can be months!

If you go and see your doctor… he might well give you a prescription to see an Opthalmologist… which might just help to cut down the waiting time.

Also, visiting the Optho Cabinet in person might, just might help too… when seeking an appointment.
I’ve know the receptionists to be very helpful fact-to-face…

Failing all else, if the Opthalmo appointment is very long time away andyour doctor feels it necessary, he might send you to the hospital, where you might be seen almost immediately.
That happened to me… but not for cataracts.

Thinking about it… I think one opticien near me can also check for cataracts, so you might well find others who can do the same… worth checking with those in your area.

Merci Stella - good advice re face to face -

I’m Lily my cat is Ellie.

Opticians can tell you of onset cataracts, but only the Optho will be able to say when the cataract is ready for removal.
Good advice from Stella re face to face, our old MT phoned on our behalf (I miss his old school ways) and we only waited a few weeks
Good Luck

My optician told me there were signs of cataracts, and I should see an opthalmo. I just phoned up and booked. That was 9 months ago and my appointment is next week :grinning::tada:

Ophthalmos are scare on the ground round here and since cataracts are a slow thing it didn’t seem right to ask for an urgent appointment (which they will do immediately if necessary). After all everyone I know who has had cataracts has been told there is no rush to remove them and often didn’t bother for a year or two after.

Agreed. I think I was diagnosed at least 4 years ago. Still doing fine. Certainly no need for an op yet.

Just as an aside, it’s a very curious word, that almost everyone misspells.

ophthalmologist

Note the extra ‘h’, which even I almost always miss out.
Sorry for the pedantry.

I’ll excuse the pedantry, so long as you excuse the spelling mistakes…

I’ve almost given up worrying about making such mistakes… although I do cringe when I notice, or someone mentions it… I do my best. rattle away and that’s that.

I am well aware that I have spelt treasurer without the “a” in the local bulletin. I knew it didn’t look right… but I just couldn’t figure out why… I could only think of the French spelling, but I knew it wasn’t quite the same…

I mentioned this, later, to the person in charge… who smiled and said that if anyone noticed and remarked… she would congratulate them for spotting the deliberate mistake… !!

(At my 11+ exam I wrote “world” with an “i” although I knew full well that it didn’t look right… it wasn’t until I was outside the school that I remembered… too late… but I still passed. )

Pedantry is good, and no need to apologise. But do remember that the French spelling has no extra H (thankfully as th is not easy for most French people). It’s ophtalmologue in French, rather than ophthalmologist. So in the mixed up language used on here both ophthalmo and ophtalmo could be correct!

I managed to use both the French and English spelling in my reply …

One of things I’ve learned is that if I need something done, I ask my specialist to chase it. He is brilliant. My medicin traitant isn’t quite as pushy, good as he is.

It seems that as with planning permission, tax forms and so on, you need to identify the right person to apply pressure on your behalf! (or be lucky enough to find one)

I’ve had mine even longer.

I’ve had mine even longer.

an optremetist whoops, spelling, can check your eyes for contact lenses, supply glasses prescribed by an opthamologist, who wille be a surgeon qualified to test your eyes extensively, and make a plan for your cataracts if needed. I had my right eye done a few months ago in Agen near where I live. Brilliant. Vision and colours transformed. driving after 3 days. 20 mins op, delightful lady surgeon talking all through, you just need a taxi home! Look on line for a good one near you, and make an appointment, you may have to wait a couple of months.
