CESU for dummies please

Hello again everyone! As the header gives a clue, can someone please enlighten me properly? The question is: domestic help in general. I’m 59, knackered and not swimming in money. So, there’s a call round here for domestic help. I have got my 35 years in in the uk, but they’ve just thieved another year’s pension from me, so it’s another 8 before I get it. As I understand it, I don’t need to register as auto-entrepreneur or similar, but at the same time it’s legal. Where do I stand with being an S1 beneficiary? What do I gain, what do I lose? Any help gratefully received.

If you sign up to CESU as an employee then CESU will calculate and deduct charges. I think you will need to register a siret number, but not open an AE.

However, in theory if you build up cotisations in France then France becomes your competent State, so you will loose your eventual S1. There is much debate as to whether you have to have built up enough to be eligible for a French pension, even a very small one, to become ineligible. Or whether any cotisations will rule you out. Other approaches people have done is to work for a week or two back in the UK, so then the UK is the last place your worked and will be your competent State.

It is a very muddy area.

No, no siret number, it is all done through their platform.

I can ask our cleaning lady who signed up to CESU fairly recently, if that would help. She didn’t mention having a Siret number.

I wasn’t being clear. The siret number seems to be for you, not the person employed!

Comment obtenir un numéro de SIRET en tant que particulier employeur et dans quels cas est-il nécessaire ?.

Sorry Jane, I misunderstood. I don’t have a Siret number either, I just signed up as an individual.

It’s not that clear as our invisible cleaner doesn’t have a siret number, and neither do we for contracting her services (we do for other things).

Oh dear, this is getting muddier by the minute . So am I dealing with URSSAF ? Or is CESU a different kettle of octopus?

CESU is snugly tucked under URSSAF’s wing.
