We are heading to my sisters wedding in the UK in 2 weeks (yes another one). The tunnel is booked but but wanted to wait to see who is coming before booking accommodation. Last time we did the tunnel we slept at Abbeville on the way back which was perfect. However our son is bus/ training to meet us the evening before the tunnel and the train comes to Boulogne sur mer. Can anyone recommend somewhere to sleep? We’ll be 4. Would be nice to be near a beach open to hotel / b and b / mobile home ect
It’s a while since we’ve been there but we used to stay in Escalles, a village which is pretty close to the tunnel and has a beach a few minutes’ walk away, plus Cap Blanc Nez. There are five places to stay and three restaurants according to Booking.com.
We always stayed at hotel l’Escale which seems to have expanded since our last visit and now has a pool and spa. I don’t know what that’s done to prices. It still has its own restaurant that’s across the road from the main part of the hotel.
I can’t recommend any accommodation, but don’t forget to check your passports and dont forget to take them ![]()
I thought of that too. Toryroo, did you get your passport sorted out? ![]()
La Matelot was very nice with an amazing restaurant, but that was almost 2 decades ago and is very likely to have changed.
Would that be La Matelote? It was very good the last time we went there but it was a long time ago, like you. We also liked the restaurant at Nausicaa, the aquarium.
Haha very funny you lot! Yes I did get my passport
. Needed it for last months wedding!
Just to add happy to not be in Boulogne itself, we’ll have the car packed with stuff so would feel better having parking of some sort not just city centre street.
If Escalles suits you, they have onsite parking. I always tried to book into their garage but it wasn’t very big. It was locked at night.
We did too!
It was the first time I’d had plateau des fruits de mmmmmmer.
That’s interesting. How long ago?
Maybe 20 years ago. If you ever wondered, “Who’s that strikingly handsome man over there?” — it wasn’t me ![]()
We also used to stay at the Hotel Atlantique in Wimereux, until it became too expensive. It’s nice as a treat.
The last time we went there was the year we moved to France, so a while back. Before that, when we were driving back and forth to our holiday home, we always stopped in Escalles the night before we went through the tunnel.
Before that we did loads of booze cruise weekends there and visited different parts of the Côte d’Opale. The coast road is a lovely drive.
Now I quite like the look of Boulogne and can get us a cute apartment for around 100€. Hotel no good as we have our big boy (25) with us and our adult sized 11 year old so wed need 2 rooms. The parking looks like a real issue however! ![]()
Eek €349 for one night. Not an option for us!
Sorry about that, Tory. It must have changed a lot over the years.
Going back to Boulogne, the times we’ve stayed parking has been on the street, so not ideal if you have a lot of kit.
Ha I’ve found the parking filter
. I think a little beach village might be better. I’ve found a gated apartment block but its in Calais ![]()
Calais always seems quite big to me but it’s not that far to the tunnel on the motorway.
I think part of your problem could be that it’s tourist season up there, with lots of visitors from Belgium and Holland as well as the UK. It’s going to leave you less choice, unfortunately.
Yes, it would be.
I’m good found something about 4km out a little beach village, will double check when home but looks OK
Tory - I looked on the website of the photographer who took the wedding photos when you went last month. She had some beautiful shots - some of them were so different. Where abouts is sis No. 2 getting married ?
