Changing my browser's default search engine

For some inexplicable reason, other that it’s IT, suddenly when I google something, the Yahoo page becomes the default - how do I get back to normality? And why does it change for no reason?

And another thing - why does a title here have to be more than ten letters? More stupid IT reasons I guess.

Yahoo must be the one bit of USA garbage ahead of McDo and KFC…

When you say ‘when I google something’, I’m assuming you mean when you put something to search for in the search bar at the top, outside the normal viewing area. If so. Sounds like the default search engine has been changed in your browser. You can change it back. How you do it depends upon the browser. You could search for how to do it :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

So that we know what you are talking about when browsing the thread listings, instead of having to open a thread titled “Question?” to find out what it’s about.

In Firefox you go to Preferences / Search and change it on that page.

In Chrome it’s the same.

Other browsers are available with (I imagine) a similar setting.

You’ve probably installed some new software recently and didn’t notice the tiny pre-checked box saying ‘make Yahoo my default browser’.

Yes, that’s really annoying. Haven’t seen it for a while though. Thought it was now illegal in th EU (bundling without explicit permission). If you get it from a US Source though, they probably take no notice.

I’ve changed the title so it’s helpful

Nope, not installed anything (this is on my mac. Iphone is ok). I use the Mac default Safari, but cannot see anything that says what default search engine to use. But if you say it is there, I shall continue to look.

Maybe it is a precursor to next week when the world will be regaled with Musktrump garbage, we are forced to find US websites only… :joy:

Yep. Just searched and it is the wretched Yanks dictating to us how to run our lives - this time the mighty Apple. they used to have their default as Safari/Google that we non geeks were quite happy to live with all these years, and then for no reason (read here: loadsa extra backhand money) on some updates they defaulted to something called Bing who in turn defaults to Yahoo…

I hope when I get my SSD in soon and change to Linux, I will not be subjected to all this nonsense… or, will I

Safari menu / Preferences / Search tab (fifth from the left):

That’s a compulsory part of using an Apple device.:stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I’m trying to make more use of Qwant browser and search engine designed I think by a frenchman. I’m hoping to move away from Google as much as possible.

That’s interesting.

My experiment with Arc didn’t last long, and I’m always interested in a new browseur

Edit: as far as I can see, it’s just a SE

My search engine of choice is still duckduckgo for personal searches. Ironically Google gives me the best results for work.

Firefox and Startpage for me.

Thanks - found it a postit reminder stuck on for next time!

There’s ecosia who say they use the income to plant trees. I now use the brave browser which has it’s own search engine. Pretty good regarding privacy, I believe.

In this case no, Apple were actually just complying with EU legislation. Had it been the US you would have had no choice

“To meet the requirements in the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in the European Union, iOS and iPadOS include a choice screen that provides an additional way to choose a default web browser from a list of options.”

Apples - form a group over here. Androids - go and stand in the corner over there.
