Classic customised bikes

Happy new year everyone!

Question came up last night with some Dutch friends, he has 6 classic custom bikes he wants to import from The Nederlands when he moves, any advice on the inevitable pitfalls?! Bikes being customised being the main issue.

He’s also looking to link up with other classic bikers 36, 86, 87 areas.

Thanks in advance!

Are we talking of motorbikes?

Assuming motorbikes, how classic and how customised are they?

I have my all original 1957 Triumph Speed Twin in France. I couldn’t bear to officially change

it over with a new reg number!

Yes motorbikes! They are 50’s, 60’s and 70’s choppers so heavily modified…. They are Harleys and Triumphs.

You’ve got two problems. They’re too old to have certificates of conformity so you’ll either need to get single vehicle approval, which will likely be slow and expensive, or you’ll need to go the FFVE route for a vehicule de collection and they don’t look kindly on significant modification.

You’re probably fine if it never leaves the garage. Completely illegal if you ever want to use it.

BMW were very obliging in providing my UK registered 1991 R100RT last year with a C of C for 120 euros without any quibble. Didn’t even want to see the bike, just the log book.

Very pretty, beautiful condition :+1: Only a philistine of a law enforcement officer would harass you :slightly_smiling_face:

Obviously depends on the degree of customisation. If he’s changed the foot pegs fair enough, if he’s converted them to choppers not so much so :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

That is a shame as these bikes need to be ridden and the condition of French roads and the general attitude to bikers in France,is so much more appealing than the UK. I am considering importing a late 60’s twin, probably 650 BSA. Registration is easy through ffve.
