Why?
I’ve seen red backgrounds, yellow, pink - is there any significance, or is it just a choice made by some people?

We saw a pink one the other day and wondered what it was for. I’m sure there were red TT plates years ago.

We recently purchased a Fiat 500C which was registered in Monaco. It arrived with pink number plates, which we were told was indicative of the fact that it was registered in Monaco. Is it possible that there are different colours for the various principalities ? Just a thought !
My understanding is it’s pink for any imported car.
Its for the temporary WW plates whilst a new or imported car is waiting for its definitive immatriculation. Used to be the same as normal plates, but there was a lot of fraud/cloning.

Hi Jennifer, I did consider that possibility, but the Fiat was originally registered new in the Lot et Garonne region, before finding its way to Monte Carlo. I am awaiting the Carte Grise to be put in my name, at which point I imagine it will be allocated a regular number plate. I actually quite like it 
Mention of WW plates reminds me. In 1999 I started work as a driver for Transports Gauthier and drove several different vehicles for the first month. I then took a weeks unpaid leave to go to Nottingham and sign the sale papers of our flat there. I arrived back on Saturday morning and as usual reported in to find out what I was doing on Monday and collect my advance expenses money but Paul, the Patron, waved me away saying ‘come in at 9 on Monday’.
I thought I had got the sack but turned up and was summoned to his office. When I got there he pointed to a brand new Renault Magnum tractor unit outside the window, not even in the firm’s colours yet, and said ‘there’s your wagon, keep it clean and look after it, now go into the office and they’ll tell you which trailer to take and where you are going.’ 
I did as I was bidden and noted with pleasure the WW plate on it thinking at least I won’t have any trouble remembering that.
A few weeks later, after leaving it over a weekend at the paint sprayer’s place I took it into the Department’s checking station and was issued with my real plates. I was not happy and with reason. I drove that lovely motor for the next 3 years but can’t remember a single digit from the plate, but I do remember wistfully the lost WW.
Normal Monégasque plates are white with blue lettering. There are special plates for specific bodies as well but I think they are green.
