Credit Agricole wants to know the value of our house

Talking to the bank on a different matter, they said that they needed to know the value of our house.
We do not have an overdraft or mortgage with them or anybody else.
We were told that this was an EU regulation.
Has anyone else come across this?
By the way we have not had our house valued as we have no intention of moving.

My immediate reaction is skeptical. For Wealth Tax reasons the Impots may want to know one’s total property holdings, but I can’t see what a right or interest a commercial bank would have to that information just in the course of normal banking transactions. They may be just fishing for info to add to your profile and thus see if there’s any other product they can flog you. House insurance, loan against value, whatever.

I had a phone call from CA with the same request. I asked them for details of the relevant regulation and they said that they didn’t have it to hand. I asked them to email it to me when they found it and that I’d reply with the info.

Undeterred, they said that we also had to have an annual meeting to discuss all my insurances including property and vehicle (none of which are currently with CA). When I said ‘no’ they again insisted it was a legal requirement. I suggested they should include that info with the EU property value request details. That was fourteen months ago and I haven’t heard from them since.

My first reaction to you both is ‘it’s CA, what’s not to expect?’. Wouldn’t touch them with a bargepole after their antics many years ago.
I have no idea as to an answer and can only say that my bank, La Poste, has never asked for such and the only time I have been asked was by the notaire over Fran’s succession.

We’ve been with CA for 18 years and never had intrusive questions like that. As always I believe it can happen though, with probably most banks’ branches, depending on the whims of local management.

Yes, they sent my wife (they much have her email on the account for some reason) a very long list of info that they want.

They probably do need some of it as part of KYC (know your customer) and AML (anti money laundering) initiatives but they also need to respect GDPR rules to collect the minimum data set.

Each of the CA regions (I’m with Touraine-Poitou) is able to operate pretty much as it wishes, under the general CA umbrella, so there is huge variation between regions. Furthermore, each individual branch will develop its own character based on the staff, nature of their customers etc.

I think here in CA T-P they seem to view incomers to this largely agricultural region as a source of great wealth. In my case, they are very mistaken

Shame, I was about to hit you up for a loan.

Our CA “personal advisor” explained that they needed to show that they were keeping in touch with customers at least once a year (something like that).
As I did want to ask them a question, I agreed to an appointment which suited us. I asked, they answered adequately. then they asked if we were interested in this product, that one
 whatever
 and I said no thankyou.
That’s 'nuff for another 12 months.

Surely the Impots folk already have a vague idea of value
 rateable/rentable value at least.
Sales’ Market value is so difficult to determine (well nigh impossible), until the contract is finally signed and the deal is done

Having done a quick Google search, I’ve not been able to find out why CA should be asking clients about the value of their home
unless perhaps if the client is asking for a loan
and wishes to use the property as collateral ???

I’ve never been asked and don’t think I would give 'em a figure anyway
 not their business!

You’re quite right, I was forgetting that, we were with Charente-Perigord but more importantly the manager of the store in the neighbouring town also covered our local office and he was a miserable git. So @Jane_Williamson’s request seems to be something dreamed up by someone just down the road with time on his hands, or just plain nosey of course. :unamused:

News to me as well as have had an account with CA for 36 years and have never ever been asked such questions by branches used in two different depts. My current house is insured with them anyway and they know the value as they had to use that for a figure to use for rebuilding etc. If you get a call asking for such info, put the phone down immediately.

Thought so. The branch half year sales targets are looming :joy:

An enthusiastic staff member pushing the “know your client” requirements to the limit I would think. Even if about wealth tax, that’s for the fisc to investigate not the bank!

Fleece your customer more like :face_with_hand_over_mouth: This is a bank we’re talking about after all.

Surely no-one is forced to buy their products
 just like anywhere else
 the client/customer made the choice

Not much alternative though is there? €500 notes stuffed into the matress doesn’t cut it in today’s world (and just attracts the wrong sort of attention)

I seem to recall that there’s a built in right to have a bank account in France?

Sort of, but not sure the right extends to foreigners.

).
