Dating in France

Goodness me!

The English language distinguishes between ‘widower’ and ‘widow’ the original poster used the wrong term and created some confusion - but what’s that got to do with you, why get your underwear in such a twist over it?

Correct. Widower is the correct noun for a widowed male. Widow=female

Enough personal, and frankly rude, attacks! Such behaviour impresses no one.

Whilst ignoring the arrogant deviation on this thread, I would just like to remind the OP and anyone else reading here to be very wary of dating website scams. Not all ladies are ladies and some just want money

I would second the recommendations above, look local.

That’s not remotely sleezy; he’s just using an expression.
You might not like it but it’s widely used.

Please stop constantly nit picking at posts. It’s getting waring.

I agree and I would appreciate it @David_M_Matthews if you would edit / delete your posts. However I do understand why you felt the need to snap back.

This is true. I almost fell for a scam on Facebook - a French “woman” who was FB friends with a female photographer from Caen who I know (and who is real!) started up a conversation with me on FB Messenger.

At first I was dubious but the conversation was good so I continued for a while. After a couple of weeks she (It?) wanted to switch to using a different messaging application. At this point I started to wonder why, and became more suspicious when she (it) got a bit pushy, wanting instant replies etc. I also got the impression that the person at the other end of the conversation was juggling several discussions at once, as they asked questions which I had already answered.

Eventually of course I was asked to send some money for a plane ticket so that “she” (it!) could come and visit me in the UK, at which point of course I pulled the plug.

So yes scammers can be quite convincing and also play a waiting game to get their victims hooked.

Take care folks - and meeting in real life (without paying for plane tickets!) is always better.

I am a widow, not a widower but its easy to type it wrong from a keyboard or even one of those automatic word spell things. I have never wanted to use one of these online dating sites, too many have been caught out and folks are not so honest these days either. You would do better to get to know someone locally rather than a Nigerian prince who wants to deposit millions in your bank account or someone wanting a plane ticket, quick marriage and a visa. Be careful out there, its scammers galore these days.

Rather than jump in guns blazing as is your style, you could have left out the last part of your question to which I take great exception to the ‘TF’ and ‘sleazy’. OK, reading the first post again, yes, the poster can well be female. I misread it, OK? Rather than being obnoxious, you could easily have pointed this out politely. But you are incapable of this.

So in explanation, and a sincere apology to the op, I misread the post and too quickly assumed you to be a male hetro .

I now re-word my last statement and warn you that traditionally, and sadly, French women have not always been afforded the respect that they deserve and bear this in mind when dating some - and I say some - men.

OH boy, reading back on the full post, the op is a man :grinning:

My first response is now legit :grinning:

I can walk with my head high as I am not now sleezy :joy:

Perhaps we all need to calm down a little. Also worth bearing in mind that we come from a wide range of backgrounds and are of an age where many express themselves without feeling a need to filter between brain and keyboard. What we might say to a close friend may not always be right to share on SF.

Please remove this @Adam1 as it contravenes our T&C. Thank you.

Sorry all,
I only asked what I thought was a simple and honest question. I didn’t expect it to generate all this anger and animosity. Thank you to the few who genuinely attempted to give me a proper answer. For the record I am a male & from now on I’m going to say I am plain SINGLE, as I never liked the “W” word in whichever tense it is used.
What I’ve also learned is that I mentioned retiring & some of you have immediately pigeonholed me with the old has beens, & maybe I should go meet people in knitting classes etc. Well I may be 63, but I’m lucky enough to be living an active & healthy lifestyle. I run every morning, tour regularly in my 4 berth camper & ride a large capacity motorcycle on & off road for fun!

Welcome and try not to take offence

Hah, I know what you mean. I occasionally find myself talking about “old people” and then remember that I’m 60 and the people involved aren’t much older, if older at all. :joy:

We have a friend, 73, who has been trying online dating. No luck so far. I personally don’t consider myself an old has been at 71. There are activities for seniors that are not knitting classes, e.g. whole day rambling. We belong to a seniors’ table tennis group.

Heavens! You are a spring chicken. My mother, in her late eighties, used to talk about the “old dears”

Not at all Burnie - there are clubs and groups that offer things like “patrimoine”, photography, bridge, tennis, ecology, multinational get-togethers, painting - mind you some of the knitting and tapestry groups do the most amazing handiwork which they then exhibit.

An awful lot of us are early retired! And don’t diss knitting - I go to a stitch and bitch group that is all ages and very lively😀. But maybe tango or flamenco evenings might suit better.

If you don’t know this your marie should have a list of all associations and there are usually forums of associations in September in most towns. Rather than apps I really think that getting involved in an activity you like is likely to be more useful as an adult. After all the people you might want to meet are possibly also not comfortable with apps.
