You can still charge from a standard domestic socket, albeit slowly. There’s a lot about that in this thread.
Long journeys are not hard given that the rapid charging network here in France is largely very good. If you are nervous about it you just need to do some planning & research, which is cheaper than buying a hybrid then changing it for a proper EV later.
