It’s chocolate
I thought no matter how well Brits spoke French, they never lost their accents. You’re probably the exception that proves the rule…
No, mon petit accent anglais is alive and well. Unlike OH who is now asked where he is from in France, which is galling to me… The plus side is that people are positive about my French and say nothing to him, which is galling for him. So we are quits on the galling front.
When I was young 3 of us girls shared a flat with 1 bloke.
The bloke used to drive us mad because out of a packet of Chocolate Digestives, this guy would take out and eat only what he needed. And then he would put the rest of the packet back in the fridge. Even if there was just 1 chocolate digestive biscuit left.
None of us girls could understand it - we’d have eaten the lot.
I confess that I used to eat them sandwich style. Chocolate side in… ![]()
I regard my spoken French as very poor. However, down here in the Vienne (86) several people have told me that my French version of RP means I ‘must be from Paris’. Which is Gauling to anyone…
If I’m buying food on our local markets (12/46) I always stress the last syllable, so that I’m not taken for a a Brit from Paris, but a Brit from somewhere else…
I love dark chocolate, and I have never bothered to find out anything as to who makes it and what they put in it. If I like it I eat it. ![]()
As to accents I emphasise my local one, it sounds English to the locals but to anyone further afield it is pleasingly confusing. ![]()
Alter Eco. Organic and fair trade. It costs between 2 and 3 euros at my local Leclerc, depending on what it contains (natural, orange, ginger etc). Pretty good quality. Just for info, raw chocolate bought by independent chocolatiers, increased in price by around 30% last year and will increase by another 10% this year. With increasing electricity costs on top of that it’s a very difficult period for small, independent chocolatiers, who are having to increase their prices in line with all this inflation. Those in a financial position to buy regularly from these independent specialists will be helping yet another sector in crisis. ![]()
Various brands, but my advice is to go to a good coffee roaster (brulerie); they always have good chocolate bars, often 80 or 90 percent cacao. We have two bruleries in Chartres and while they’re not cheap, we keep ourselves in good coffee, karkadeh and chocolate.
Lidl have some good dark chocolate too.
Can’t be too esoteric on this subject as although I’m super picky on this subject, all purchasing of aforementioned substance is by OH (really prefer ‘wife’). However, here we go:-
Have just returned from SW France and NE Spain with a large amount of chocolat chosen by OH in consultation with her sister who is visiting from Jo’burg. I suspect this chocolate is being consumed secretly during the day, but only presented for general consumption after dinner.
For me this chocolate falls into two categories, the dark nutty slabby stuff and the too cute chocolate animals. However, the embarrassing thing is that the choc of the animals is far superior -darker and glossier than the other.
My choc criteria are simply very dark and very shiny.
Not trying to initiate any thread drift, but love Spanish drinking choc with masses of vanilla…
Oh yes.
Thick enough to dip your churros in ![]()
What’s it called? We’re going to be in Spain in 3 weeks. ![]()
I hope you are not referring to the horrible stuff often served with churros that is just packed with cornstarch, and makes my teeth go on edge?
interesting snippet of information…
for those who can’t open the above link, this is the whole article/photoshoot
Behind a paywell, but when we visited Bayonne last year did a fascinating exploration of the jewish heritage there, and the immigration of jewish chocolatiers from portugal
already dealt with… our posts crossed… ![]()
a well known and respected chocolaterie artisanale a Agen is real chocolate. The products are of very high quality. I am not sure if they are well known outside the department. They have a shop in the O’Green commercial center in Boe 47.
There’s a delicious, mouth-watering chocolatier in Perigueux… ![]()
