Dent in car bodywork…how do we repair it?

Returned to our car in town carpark and found a dent. Annoying, but not worth professional repair.

Any ideas how to make it better? It’s a VW ID.3 and I can’t even find out what material the carcass is, so all I know is that is quite flimsy.

Thanks

Push out from behind?

Is it attracted to a magnet, if so its steel, if not could be plastic like a lot of Renault panels. Bloody annoying though! There are in the UK, mobile paintless repairers who can skilfully roll out a lot of dings. It takes skill not to make it worse. Do such repair services exist in France?

You’re probably easiest to fill it. Try gently pushing it back from behind to reduce the ding. You can gently hammer it back but you’ll probably make a bigger mess.
Two pack filler from Norauto etc. Spray can of paint to match your cat. Sand down - fill - sand - refill and carefully feather in the edge. Paint.

Or just ignore it - there’ll be another dent in a month

Cynic

Though probably good advice if you live in Paris.

Or use any French supermarket…

It’s a darn shame when these dents happen…

I’m wondering if it might be best to leave it… unless you feel sure that whatever you do will make things look better than at present…

best of luck

Difficult for an amateur to do a decent job in that location. You’ll need aerosols, of primer, car colour paint and varnish. But such a respray will always catch the light slightly differently and be noticeable close up. It’s only a tiny dent - but if there’s any bare metal, finely cover with a dab of clear nail varnish or similar and then maybe go over that with a touch-up pen that matches your car’s colour.

Ask a small garage which says it’s a carrossier and which does ‘passage au marbre’ for a quote.

I had a very similar type of dent when I visited my house here about 5 years ago. Returned to the UK and got a professional bodyshop to deal with it and an amazing job, as you couldn’t see any evidence of the dent, but it did cost. You can try to push out the dent from the back and I think that’ll help but you’ll still see a dent. I certainly wouldn’t attempt any filling or respray, and I consider myself quite practical. My view now I’m in France is that I just roll with any dings or scratches as it seems to be a national pastime not to bother about ‘other’ vehicles. I once had the complete front grille on a bmw completely stoved in by some nice person with a tow bar who just drive away. Ultimately it’s just aesthetic and doesn’t effect the car’s performance.

Which offends us. But not enough to spend much money on.

Norauto provides a repair service. No idea about cost though.

I read recently that all cats’ fur is a combination of black and ginger.

Yes but you try blending a bit in on a tabby

My advice is just get it fixed Jane. No amateur job will look OK and the wing needs to be resprayed. A nasty ding, how did it happen, the door edge of a van or truck?

The steel has stretched @billybutcher so not a pop out job I fear.

Good question, I’ve had miracles done by such guys in the past, even in the office car park.

Very interesting! Thanks.

It was like that when we returned to the car park…

Very annoying. We were just walking back to ours a couple of years ago and could see a VSP reversing into the spot beside ours and bash in our wing and door. The driver turned out to be about sixteen and got out, apologised and told us he didn’t know how to drive yet. We didn’t need him to tell us that.
