What an exceptional house in such a special setting.
“A former fishermans cottage” - something tells me the original fisherman would no longer recognise the interior!
Thinking of moving John?
I love all the quirky stuff but I’d hate all the dusting!
No, this is @John_Scully 's holiday home! (one of many around the world)
Three cottages Mat. Getting down to the sea must have been “fun”
There was a report recently that an “Omaze” (lottery house charity company) house valued at about 3 million was returned by the winner due to its crumbling cliff top location.
Not a problem for this one on solid granite - spectacular but a little big for the 2 of us😉
I’ll pass as I can understand the locals here much better than I could there.
Lovely part of the World though, and to live in John le Carré‘s house would be special. I like his work and he seemed a very reasonable and thoughtful man. I certainly agreed with his political views on many topics. He’s a loss ![]()
If I was to move back to the UK I think Cornwall, and Mousehole in particular would be nice. But all I’d need is one modest fisherman’s cottage (with a car charger
). Even for anybody that could afford the asking price, the maintenance costs on le Carré’s place, especially exposed on a cliff top, must be eye watering.
One thing in the description I wondered about, why would fishermen have their cottages at the top of a cliff?
Where would you put the car though?
Beside the yacht ![]()
More chance parking it on the yacht🤣
By having the house up on the cliffs, for fishermen there is a good view of the sea… the weather, the sea birds and the shoals of fish etc etc… ideal for Dad to spot when there’s a good haul just waiting to be “plucked”… ![]()
ideal for the family watching for “Dad’s” return, to go and help with the catch…
all sorts of good reasons to have a “bird’s-eye-view”
I agree. Very special.
I think the character of the original buildings has been lost - too many faux antique additions, not least the wood panelling (a tad unlikely) - for me much of it looked like the bland interior of a hotel that had been created by an interior designer rather than an architect. Also the ‘library’ lacked a comfy armchairs and a desk. Obviously their absence didn’t prevent him from writing, but spontaneously picking a book off a shelf is a lovely indulgence…
Oh, and lots of fine rugs!
I suspect that is because it has been staged by the estate agents. They will have had stuff like that taken out so that the overall dimensions of the room can be seen.
Yep… looks like that to me, too… someone’s staged things but (in my opinion) not taken a second look at the photos, before putting them on the website presentation…
It doesn’t sell the property to me… but the view… yes, that is wonderful.
They will have had stuff like that taken out so that the overall dimensions of the room can be seen.
Yes, but they’ve used a wide angle lens to make the rooms seem much wider than they are.
Yes but, our humble cottage on the cliffs at the mouth of the Solway Firth had far more interesting views. I’m sat opposite a composite painting by my wife that consists of forty studies from one window of our house of the everchanging view

Unfortunately don’t have a better readily available image, but there was was always weather coming in over the Irish Sea, massive cloud formations and spectacular sunsets - the Solway’s skies are amazing and everchanging.
Or for less than €200,000 you could have this
(Personally I wouldn’t pay more than €20k as would cost a fortune to redecorate, but each to their own. And one has to admire their commitment to a maximalist style)
Doesn’t really grab me, but in addition to price, it has the major advantage of being in France!
