Did the Tories learn nothing?

I remember seeing a documentary about the Brexit negotiations where Michel Barnier and Jean-Claude Juncker were insistent that the UK must only deal with a united EU and not individual Member States. It seems the current UK government didn’t learn anything from those negotiations…

The EU has slapped down the UK government after it attempted to bypass Brussels on post-Brexit trade rules.

Documents obtained by The Independent show that the European Commission was unhappy after British officials asked each member state directly about their plans to cope with new checks on goods coming into the UK.

The whole article is an interesting read but the comments by David Davis, John Redwood and Rees-Mogg demonstrate that the government remain as clueless as they were seven years ago.

Is it ignorance, or is it trying to sow the seeds of dissent and set member states against each other/Brussels?

Whichever, they conveniently forgot what Brussels said, but more likely, just thought they would be able to get round it later.

Once you’ve resigned from a club you don’t have to play by the club’s rules any more. The gov is now trying to do deals behind the bike shed with individual members, knowing it won’t get far dealing with the club.

Even if you ever did…

But the club members still do.
