DL requirements for Scooters

Hi Guys, I am 73 my wife 70. We both have Florida DL’s however I and considering getting a Scooter. How large can i get one without using my driver license . I really like the ones with 2 wheels on the front and 1 wheel in back for stability purposes.

Unless you have a biker background and a motorcycle license (I’m 72, and have both (for 50 years plus), and despite having a bike in the garage I wouldn’t risk my neck on French roads on it anymore) so I would respectfully advise you to forget it Ron.

If you don’t mind driving on the road you could get yourself a Citroën Ami. No licence needed. You could both go in it, and there’s room for a shopping bag. Fnac may be doing some kind of deal at Christmas, also sold in a few other shops and Citroën dealers. Also I read in auto-moto.com this week that only 1 accident in 13 in them is fatal.

You will need to buy insurance as well though.

I’m also 72 and currently riding a 160cc scooter everyday in Vietnamese city traffic. If grannies older than me can do it, why can’t I? It’s been 6 months so far with no problems or close calls.

What I read into Ron’s post was that he was about to launch himself and Mrs. Ron onto French roads on a (what I would consider underpowered) scooter with no motorcycling experience whatsoever. Having fallen off motorbikes more times than I can remember, at our age I’d say that’s like playing Russian Roulette with a bullet in five of the six chambers :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Edit: On reflection , in your location maybe you are all whizzing around on scooters, where I live it’s cars, vans and pickups. All generally in the middle of the road.

@Roger_Lapin…yes, I think that the white line in the centre of the carriageway is just there for decorative purposes and most of my local Frenchies will use ‘all’ of the blacktop especially on corners….

Quite alarming if not used to the local protocols :face_with_peeking_eye:

Over the brows of hills followed by an exaggerated swerve is the is the favourite game here. It’s fecking tedious :roll_eyes:

I’ll confess to being one that often takes the “racing line” through bends but only if I can see that it’s clear in the opposite direction.

I agree…totally irritating…to say the least.

Well, there is a bit of a difference between the racing line/defensive driving and just plain dangerously incompetent :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: but I kinda expect it here and plan for it with numerous changes of underwear in a manner of speaking.
