We are with Orange and our system is ADSL. Orange/FT are in the process of updating the area around where we live to fibre and we’re not sure if we want it or not.
Do you have a choice ?
must you have it to upgrade from the ADSL
what would you be offered to replace the ADSL besides fibre
Where we live, the area is prone to lightning attacks. We have had our PC, Routers, Liveboxes and phones all zapped during lightning strikes over the years. Now, we unplug everything connected to the computer whenever we know storms are in the area. So if we upgrade to fibre, would we still be affected by lightning strikes or are only the copper lines affected.
We look forward to your comments.
What you can get can be checked on ariase.com. All you need is your current landline phone number. This will also tell you which providers, other than Orange, you can select from and how much it will cost.
Quite a lot of France is including where we are.
You can get strikes that cause spikes on the copper telephone lines, and these should not happen with fibre. However, you can also get spikes on the power lines coming into your home although there is much more protection against these. I too have had my internet box and printer frazzled and do the same as you. Once I get fibre, very soon, I shall continue to be paranoid
I see that, where we are in Vienne, Orange fibre is not available or even planned. I understood that Orange were responsible for pretty much all the fibre infrastructure.
However, we can get Bouyges fibre. Does that mean there are parts of the country where Orange doesn’t run the fibre system?
Correct. Orange did not install and doesn’t run the fibre network where we are. It’s been done by the local government with local, government and EU funding. I’m curious that you say you can get Bouyges fibre, but seem to suggest you can’t get it from other providers. What does ariase.com say ?
Not from Orange anyway. That’s why our local government did it themselves. Orange said in no uncertain terms that they wouldn’t install fibre in the countryside around here as it wasn’t economical for them.
Yes, I’ve noticed that my “offre fibre” actually turns out to be nothing of the kind when I go and look at the details.
Plus many of the web sites (eg ariase, degrouptest) require you to be in France when looking. Fortunately I have a Kimsufi dedicated server which just happens to be physically in France.
Put in your address, or your commune and then select your address and it will give you all the myriad ways you can get internet at that address and which operators are supported.
I too have had issues where certain operators don’t seem to think they can give me fibre on their own websites when in fact they can. It can take them several months to catch up.
Edit: Just noticed that arcep even mentions Starlink. Not that I ever would.
I presume the dots showing what’s available are potential, rather than actual, connections (apart from those ppoor souls still on ADSL ), since our (new to us) house wasn’t actually connected.
Hmmm… our village clearly has fibre - has for quite a while, I think - but we’re still stuck with a 2Mbit service. Fibre has been installed along the roads near us but not yet connected, so as far as we’re concerned,it’s actual not potential.
