Does fibre make a difference

Thanks @Badger - we’ll look into that. I get confused with the download speed and the amount of GB you can use per month. It’s not the speed that’s important - it the usage you’re allowed. We don’t want to keep having to top it up each week. Does your offer include free phone calls. We only need phone and PC internet usage, no TV or any other add-ons.

And does Sosh have an English speaking helpline like Orange do?

The current deal is better than we have….

And a higher speed, I see. It might be time to threaten to leave.

The usage on fibre is effectively unlimited, although there’s probably a fair usage clause somewhere in the T&Cs but it won’t effect normal use.

We have just been “upped” from 500Mbps to 1Gbps (asynchronous), for free (wonders will never cease), by Orange, who is now inviting us to upgrade our Livebox 6 to a Livebox 7, also for free. The Livebox 7 allegedly supports speeds of up to 8Gbps - clearly, if we upgraded, we would still have a fair bit of further speed upgrade capability in the new box if ever Orange decided to increase speeds again in the future.

Did you look at the offers on ariase.com for your address ? All the information you could ever need is there including which providers you can pick from, the price (and whether it will increase after a period of time … look out for this), the speeds, amounts, telephone support and more.

I have subscribed to Skylink, and installed the necessary hardware. After the initial expense of the antenna, router, cable and membership, it costs me 40 Euros per month. The service has been faultless, and the download speed is between 100 and 200 MBs, and even 300+ on a good day. The fibre infrastructure was installed last year along the local roads, but I have no idea when it will be “live” - Ariase isn’t much help in finding out, either.

@Chris_Kaley , did you choose Starlink because you had no fibre alternative where you live? I can see that for people out in the sticks, it would be a practical choice.

Yes. I had a lousy 4G connection, which kept dropping out.

Makes sense

Interesting - looking at the map afresh

I am struck by just how much Brittany is not the place to be if you want fibre.

In fact even within the local area I seem to have chosen the area with least chance of fibre

Oh well.

Well that’s no fun. :frowning:

Perhaps they will reintroduce semaphore towers and the “optical telegraph” for you…

Talking of which, here’s a fun story I was reminded of recently…

That’s a rather ingenious way to send a hidden message.

Yes, that was an interesting tale - thanks for sharing, I hadn’t heard of it previously.

I don’t think I would call it a cyber attack  as it did not prevent the network being used for its intended purpose, but a devious use of a side channel nonetheless.

I don’t think the bit rate will be very high

Patience, grasshopper!

It’ll work during a power outage though…

Currently trying to change over from DSL to Fibre thru Orange. The quoted difference in cost is 4€. 53 to 57€. We have several in the bundle TV, land line, Internet, mobile.

We have a broken wooden pole, so the communications line (after much bitchin’) runs from a pole to tree then through the brambles for 300 meters to the house. Reported the pole to Orange and the Mairie over two years ago. Ordered Fibre in early August, contractor technician came and after some back and forth due to the distance from connection box, said he couldn’t do the install with the broken pole and the tree branches need to be cleared from the other poles along the allée. Pole isn’t fixed, but Help Line knows it. So another installation is scheduled for 12 Nov. We will know soon. In between, someone, I think a contractor, tried to say the distance was too far and go to Orange and get satellite. I think the contractor was trying not to do the work by pointing at someone else. Even though the standard in the future is supposed to be fibre (says the guy at Orange store). So copper will go away.

One thing is if the contractors are in the area, if you want fibre request it. Because if they leave and move on to the next area, it will be a long time until they come back. Squeaky wheel gets the grease. Here in 47 there are a lot of new poles painted to look like wood. The fiber cabling is thinner than older copper wires and is looped around a grey junction box and has a green tag, vs. the old blue ones. I can add a pic if requested.

I’d been trying to interest Orange in offering fibre since the fibre was strung past the house with no joy.

Two very nice chaps from Bouygues popped by and two weeks later I had fibre and the Orange landline number ported out to Bouygues.

€48 for the install to the house and €44 a month for the top package which is what I was paying for a WIMAX connection, but is 30 times faster and I’m not paying €25 a month for a land line.

To answer the OP, not that I’ve noticed a couple of weeks in, apart from the fact that I haven’t once lost the connection whereas before it was dropping several times a day.

It might well be because my old Livebox 2 was on its last legs, but I don’t care, all I wanted to do was get rid of it. I now have number 5. :joy:
