Thats generally how a split unit works, the fan coil unit inside and refrigerent lines to the outside evaporation unit. Difference with portables is a hot vent tube to outside.

We have just bought and fitted external blinds to the old single glazed porch installed by the previous owners. They do appear to be blocking most of the heat from the sun, but one can see through them. Woltu on amazon.fr (about 5 or 6 days delivery).
