EDF - Second Home Tariffs

I was checking my payments to EDF over the past few months while my house has been empty and I paid more in Feb than Dec, my usage also went up 40% in Feb (Hmm). I am on tarif bleu. Is there a newer tarif for secondary homes?

Which part of your bill went up?

Errr, no.

Electricity prices went up in February, but higher usage should only happen when the place is occupied.

Has anyone been able to access the property? Are there any devices/appliances that you might have left running differently than before?

Not to forget, are there any external sockets accessible to the neighbours?:wink:

What do you have running in your empty house? I pay every two months and this year the bill I paid in February was higher than any previous bill but that was because for some reason this year I was being billed for December and January together whereas in the past I’ve paid for November and December then January and February. My bill was higher than any previous bill because December and January are my two most expensive months. Despite the unexpected high bill my average usage throughout the winter has been down on previous years.

I thought electricity prices went down this Feb, not up although the standing charge did go up. Nowhere near enough for a 40% increase though.

Isn’t there now an extra surcharge starting in 2025 if a home owner doesn’t have a Linky meter ? If @Liz13 doesn’t have one then it may be this. Thing to do is look at the detailed bill to find out where the increase came from.

Liz you might want to look at Tempo if your property is empty over winter. We have that for our gite because we rarely have it occupied in the winter when all the red days fall. So we benefit enormously from the low tariffs of the blue days during the rest of the year.

Not if you transmit a meter reading within a stated timeframe.

@Liz13
I’m on tariff bleu and , frankly, I’ve not seen anything about a newer (higher?) tariff for second homes.
So my answer would be NO…

By looking in detail at your Bill, you should be able to identify which charges have changed. It might be your Standing Charge… it might be the kilowattage charge (or whatever it is…)
If there is a specific extra charge because your property is a Maison Secondaire, it should be identified as such in my opinion.

so, take a look at your Bill… and please come back to us with your findings.

Cheers

Unit costs did but, as you say, standing charges went up & for an unused building that creates a rise.

Also true (ish). An extra 10,20€ HT is charged bi-monthly to those without a Linky & if they have not supplied any readings to ENEDIS

Websearch CRE du 17 mars 2022 for more info.

As the OP is comparing individual months I suspect that they have a Linky already as remote monthly comparisons are not possible with old style meters.

I second that, unless the OP is running some kind of background heating, which the excessive difference does imply.

@Liz13 only mentions ‘tarif bleu’ which doesn’t help us advise anything as all that means is that they use the one of the state regulated tarifs provided by EDF i.e. it could be plain ‘base tarif’, or HC/HP, or Tempo.

Indeed, but the statement ‘Electricity prices went up in February’ still isn’t true .

Thanks Sue for this information. Looks like this would be a good option for me! Here’s the link if anyone else is interested: Schedule of Tempo-type supply offerings - RTE Services Portal
