I am trying to wire in a double light switch. The two lights are wired up and ready to connect, in fact I have just proforma joined the power to one of the two branches. So far so good.
Where I am lost is getting the two lights connected and functioning. I have a fairly ordinary double switch from the Legrand range. There are two lines of double inlets/outlets in pairs L, 2 and 1 at the top and 2, 1 and L at the bottom. The two pairs of L connections are marked red. I am sure that L must be connect diagonally to L. Then I lost it. I am not sure how I did it but when I tried I found myself with one light on whether the switch was on or off and the other not switching on and off. When I tried what I thought must be wrong I found myself with the first one of but not going on at all and the other only on. There I lost the plot.
It seems hardly worth getting an electrician in and the one we know socially has just gone off on a one month course in Paris. So, either I pay through the nose, for which I will no doubt wait anyway, or I wait anyway. It all seems a bit silly for a five minute job, especially given the number of singles I have installed. So, if somebody can explain it step by step, even give me a diagram so that starting with where to put the supply in through to cheering and reaching for a bottle of champagne when it works, I can spend a fruitful few minutes getting it right.
Peter the rest of the circuit is correct. In fact one of the extensions was the only one, so I have simply added an extra cable to the other, disconnected the single and need the double in to have the two lights working independently. All I actually need is the correct L (phase) wiring in, since the neutral and earth don't wire in to the switch but simply bypass through domino connectors. They are done correctly. It appears to be my live connections, contrary to what Sy says I think I need the bridge between the two Ls correct. Anyway, using what you sent me I got there. Now for the next round, lime painting a ceiling :-(
Somewhere on this specific lighting circuit there will be a junction box. If not, ie the circuit goes back to the fuse board, then you must create one.
The input will be essentially one live wire and one neutral return.
The output will be two live wires and two neutral returns.
Each switch within your double light switch must be connected separately - any other way creates a short circuit.
As I say give me a contact point and I will send you a wiring diagram.
Beg pardon? A double light switch only has a single supply. It is in principle the same as a single except that it has two rocker switches for two light connections. I think you are completely misunderstanding me.
You can’t link the L terminals as this gives you permanent lives! You need to re-do the 3-plates to each have a switched live maybe? Also you can’t do both switches from a single supply…
Hello all . So First post on an old topic but I’m trying to wire 4 switches to one light . I’m told I need to use an interrupter as oppose tio the U.K. system. Might anyone have have a link to a wiring diagram. Would be a massive help , thanks Dave
Assuming that you are using wired télérupteur then it has a control terminal - live goes to this via a momentary action switch - each time you close this switch the light will toggle on/off.
To wire 4 switches to control the light you need 4momentary action switches - live goes to each switch then the switched live runs back to the télérupteur control terminal, you just connect them all in parallel - then closing any of the momentary switches will toggle the light.
Oh, PS, you can do it the UK way with 2-way and intermediate switches if you want - the 2-way switches are called “va-et-vient” switches and the intermediates are permutateurs
