I’m fairly sure that unknown numbers are ignored/sent to voicemail by many people, & not just immigrants to France.
Given the amount of nonsense calling that goes on allowing a genuine caller the opportunity to leave a message is perfectly acceptable IMO. Also, calls often happen at inconvenient moments.
Not replying to email is very different; an email is non-invasive & can be dealt with without the pressure of a live caller awaiting an answer i.e. it amazes me that a lot of businesses still operate in a mid-20th century comms world.
As I have posted elsewhere, I was hit by a scumsucker English SMIDSY. He pulled onto the A20, Jct23.1 at speed and drove straight into my lane, next to the central barrier, without looking at all even though I could see his wife/partner mouthing a warning to him. Gave me a quick dismount at about 105kph and I bounced of the Armco. New leathers needed now.
My bike, a Rocket 3 TFC continued on to hit the central barrier and carried on back to lane one were it was crushed under one of Jacky Peronnet’s finest. Other than the camera’s there is nothing to repair, it is scrap, less than a year old with under 2000k on the clock.
He did not appear to have any intention of stopping but my riding partners, 16 of them, corralled him onto the hard shoulder about 500mts up the road and held him there until the rozzers arrived.

I spent a few hours in A&E being poked about and released with no pain other than a bruised ego.
The driver on the other-hand was escorted to the gendarmerie wearing bracelets and was ‘offered’ a bed for at least a night, whilst his motor was towed away to parts unknown. His wife/partner travelled back to the UK the same day.
Wow horrific! I might put our horror of a straw bale coming off a lorry whilst riding. What speed were you and pals doing in fast lane at the time? Dreadful when on a bike
I am sure that they were well within the published limit and driving at a speed suitable for the conditions. Any other answer would be entirely unreasonable for a public forum.
I’m glad you were in a group who looked after your interests. It sounds as if you had a very lucky escape all things considered. I hope they throw the book at the SMIDSY and that it hits him where it really hurts.
In the meantime, I send you my best wishes for a speedy recovery and a new bike soon.
Going back on-topic, that’s when the email works. I bought a Merida bike, and tried to get some after-sales help… The french .fr email just bounced back with an error message. Tried the UK mail from the uk website and got a reply the same day!
I went out again on another of my bikes the same evening, just to know that I hadn’t lost my bottle. Our bike club keep a couple of Avocats on retainer, they are already on the case.
