Escape to the Chateau review: an inspiring fairytale about crumbling walls

Oh, no. here I go again, pulling up an ancient thread. My SO and I just started watching ETTC, DYI this weekend and are finding it hilarious. Cutting the battery down to size is our favorite scene so far, but then we’re only on season 1  ! It was also eye-opening how few owners seemed to have a good grasp of the French language. The single woman who put on a party for the mayor and had to have everything translated - till finally the genial mayor suggested it was time she learned some French - oi! :woman_facepalming:t2: So embarrassing for her. I’d love to go on a tour and see what has happened to all of these venerable buildings over the past 3 or so years.

Thanks for the listen - and sorry for coming too late to the party.

I finally tired of the “look at us and our holistic lifestyle” repeated over and over again (coupled with “look at all these other château owners who are a bit naff”), so haven’t watched it recently.

It was good for a bit, and they still strike me as essentially WYSIWYG in a reasonably nice way type people, but (like a lot of TV) has been dragged beyond it’s natural lifespan.

Are you actually properly married if you go to a place like that? Do you go to the mairie first? How do you get around residency?

Not that we need it but… a château wedding:

let’s hope it all works out

But I am guessing that the paperwork still has to go to the Mairie ?

So you aren’t married according to French law, presumably. I don’t know who Dick is but he sounds foreign and probably not an officier d’etat civil. England and Wales are very lax about marriage rules.

Didn’t mean to rub you up the wrong way… it was a sincere comment…

With all the chaos at the moment… what more can one do but hope that it all works out… :crossed_fingers:

Our friend Dave was in the first series with Dick, cant say I saw coast.

Whatever you think of them they must genuinely have had a tough time this year.

Yep… for virtually every business, every worker… whoever… trying to keep afloat during this terrible year… it’s has been a tough time, one way or another.

seriously hoping things gradually improve, all round… for all of them.

Dick is British…I think and a journalistic and creative extrovert. May I add he is also great at establishing a bright future for the family in France.
Weather permitting.
So many of us will not be able to survive no matter how bright we are.

And being them they have made the most of it and not sat on their backsides. I love the fact that they are always seeking ways to improve the holiday/wedding experience for their guests. I use them as my inspiration when I’m thinking about ways we can improve our (very modest) cottage and surroundings.
They’ve improved the Orangerie roof (looks gorgeous), bought a second-hand carriage, built a wonderful tiny indoor plunge pool (though I worry about the condensation) and best of all, Dick has built himself a FABULOUS workshop - I am very jealous and realise I MUST make the garage into a much better workspace this winter.
I applaud what they do, love Angel’s creativity and Dick’s energy to make her ideas real. Great couple and the series are FUN and positive at a time when we desperately need good news stories and not gloom and doom all the time.

A special award maybe…and why not

I fully agree, I find them both very inspiring but they are the lucky ones and they have the income from the TV programmes to fall back on and don’t have to rely on the income from the hospitality business to make ends meet. What will become of the rest of the Chateaux owners that we have followed in previous episodes?? Some took out huge mortgages to purchase their chateau with a view to starting a wedding business/B&B and after this year, I dread to think what position they will be in. This obviously applies to anybody who is reliant on income from a gite etc. I can imagine a lot of property going on the market after this year.

They made their own luck, great to hear of an engineer doing well.
