Unexpectedly, I’m taking the ferry from Dublin to Cherbourg this week and I’ve just noticed one of the options is to book EV charging during the crossing for €15. I’ve no idea what the charging rate is, or whether it’s good value, but thought it an interesting idea.
I’ll be taking the R5 over on the ferry later in the year, mainly to avoid paying ULEZ fees. I was wondering about ferries providing charging points but I’ve not seen anything about it on BF.
So they are charging you for the privilege of charging you for charging ?
That’s what I haven’t figured out yet. If you’re just paying for the spot or if it includes the actual charge. I’d hope they’d need to specify if there are additional costs.
Fortunately I can’t see it being an issue (unless something goes really wrong) as door to door on a single charge is easily doable.
Not sure it is anything new in principle. For many years fridge lorries have been hooked up to charging points to avoid the need for rattling fridge motors spewing toxic diesel fumes into comfined deck spaces.
We went round the south side of London a few weeks back and no ulez fees.
Same here last Tuesday around the M25 from the Channel Tunnel to meet the M40. The M25 is not part of ULEZ and there’s only a tiny part of it extends beyond the M25.
Yes although the ULEZ zone is bigger than it used to be, you have to go into a London borough in order to enjoy it as Sadiq Khan’s writ does not extend further out.
It makes no sense to enforce ULEZ rules on a motorway that is inherently not urban.
No I can’t see that happening. Although the M25 can resemble an urban car park at times!
Irish ferries?
They are slow, but since you’re on the fery for 17 hours that doesn’t really matter. I prefer to take the “speedy exit” option, which is incompatible with being able to charge, and then use a fast charger on the road.
Do book a premium cabin with access to the lounge included if you can.
I’ve definitely got to go into the ULEZ zone. Took my Range rover last time and despite preregistration they (TFL) tried to charge me an extra £300/day (LEZ rate). No amount of explanation would convince them it wasn’t an old Defender, and in the end it was the collection people that eventually sorted it out. TFL still tried (unsuccessfully) to take £1250 from me. They then reduced the bill by £300, one days worth. Another phone call asking them to explain why the car was LEZ compliant for one day and not the other 3. Absolute bunch of fucking idiots.
I could completely imagine it happening, but it’s not been done yet.
Too late, though, since we only booked it last week it’s no great surprise that there was a limited variety of cabins available.
It’s been quite a tumultuous couple of weeks.
You’re in Dublin? Weather’s lovely I hear.
Don’t think you’ll like this paywall free article John …
Tomorrow. Today we’re in Limerick. A quick tour of the south of Ireland with the offspring.
Depending where you’ll be, these are the three restos I’m targeting for our August trip. All are in great parts of Dublin. If you want anymore info on Dublin just let me know
I’ve been no stranger to good Dublin restos for decades. Sometimes even on expenses
The last one is over a lovely pub, that I spent far much time in over the years, and is just around the corner from our town pad (as John Steed and Emma Peel would have said).
If you don’t fancy road testing any of the above then try the one below. I’ve been a client for more than forty years. Always excellent and in a nice part of town.
Enjoy your stay.
Haven’t been to Dublin for many years. I remember the huge old Bewley’s cafe in Westmorland Street that seemed to be permanently open. Great for a pot of tea after a few beers of an evening. We stayed at Bewley’s hotel round the corner in Fleet Street and were ushered through a door to have our breakfast to find out we were on a large high balcony overlooking the main Bewleys cafe. Just looked them up and both are no longer there . Going to the far South West of Ireland this September having done the far South East two years ago. We did consider moving to Ireland instead of France but France won out.
The price of used Polestars seems to have gone through the floor recently - 3 yo models with around 10,000 miles going between £17k and £19k (someone here just bought one). Suddenly a used EV looks like a sensible option instead of a car for the wealthy.
