…my best thought is somewhere between careful awareness and hypervigilance. … Its all down to experience of life? What happens when careful …responsibility… is overlooked, discarded.
Come again…?!?
I agree and if we’re not there already then we maybe have 2 to 5 years to make some noise about it…???
I was reading about the trialling of ‘smart uniforms’ in ten schools in China…the chip sounds an alarm if the student tries to go off campus or falls asleep in class…they can also pay for lunch through the chip so ‘the system’ knows exactly what they buy and whether they are choosing a healthy option or junk…not all parents are happy with it…(and I’m not sure I would be either…)
I know I’m probably still thinking about ‘the social crediting system’ with my comment but ‘the social crediting system’ seems particularly Orwellian to me…x
Reminding me again of Ricky Gervais in ‘Derek’ and ‘Hamster on a piano’…x
I’m probably one of those who doesn’t welcome the means of oppression into my life with open arms…nor into my children’s and grandchildren’s lives…(nor into the lives of any of the world’s children…)
A number of years ago I was falsely arrested…along with abuse of my human rights my dna was forcibly taken without my consent…
Whilst I came out of the situation relatively unscathed but severely shaken and traumatised it did give me an insight into the plight of so many innocent people the world over who are held in ‘holding centres’ and prisons for months if not years without charge…
You’d be pretty surprised how trackable you are as an individual, just from your browser fingerprint - check with https://amiunique.org/ to see whether there are indeed “thousands” of profiles like yours. You might be surprised.
Me neither which is why I avoid anything which phones home into the cloud, would not ever introduce anything like Alexa into my house and use tools to reduce my “digital fingerprint” by blocking as many cookies and ads as I can and still have the internet more-or-less function.
This is somewhat worth a read in terms of “your data” and the internet.

Ok that’s enough - muted!
I’d never have Alexa or similar in my home either…I don’t have kindle as I much prefer the feel of a book in my hands…x
My partner is talking about getting me a new ‘smartphone’ as mine is around 4 years old and admittedly glitching and creaking a little…he was talking about one with facial recognition…(!)…and I’m thinking that if he’s going to go to that sort of expense on my behalf then maybe I’d prefer a pc that I could plug in using an Ethernet cable…x
You don’t have to enable it - in fact probably best not to.
Interesting factoid - in the US (might even be the case for the UK and France) the authorities can force you to unlock your phone if you have fingerprint or facial recognition setup but cannot force you to divulge your PIN.
I haven’t got a smartphone, don’t have alexa or any other electronic assistant, I don’t think I am missing out. I do have an ancient kindle which I use when I travel other than in my car because I can’t take enough to read otherwise.
That helps with my decision making process Paul…a lot…Thankyou…
There’s not much on my phone except photos of my kids…my grandkids and my Border Collies and sunrises and sunsets and flowers and bees and wildlife…my eldest sends me intimate photos of the aftermath of her latest cancer treatment…If I was ever asked to hand over my phone then that’s what I’d be protecting by saying absolutely NO WAY…NOT A CHANCE IN HELL…
I think I have thumbprint recognition on this one which I’ve never enabled…so if I do end up with a model that has facial recognition then it’s good to know that I don’t have to enable it… xx
Blimey…! I wouldn’t know where to start with that lot…! x
I’ve got my creaky smartphone…and a creaky laptop for Netflix…and I only have Netflix as my son connected it all up plus pays the monthly subscription…x
When I think about it I only take my phone with me everywhere in case of emergencies…say if my mom needs me…or in case my car breaks down…my mobile data is always switched off and I only switch it on if I need to make a call away from home…
I guess a standard handset would serve the same purpose…???
Lots to think about…Thankyou Ben…! x
Amateur - I have a /27 publicly routed block and it’s pretty full.
The current tally for the family is: 5 PC’s, file/email server, router/firewall, 2 printers, VOIP ATA, 4 phones, 2 iPads, 1 android tablet, 2TVs, 2WiFi AP’s, Internet radio, 2 laptops, kindle and possibly a couple of other things I’ve forgotten about or which get added for a while for tinkering purposes.
You know that your home network is OTT when you need 30 IPv4 addresses an extra RFC 1918 network and two VLANs to make it all work.
Why? Civil liberties? No one will be interested in yo if you are not doing anything wrong. This is there to get the bad people who try and kill people.
Nothing to do with civil liberties-
Why complain about this-
Then say the state didn’t do enough to catch the mass killer!
Paul, who gives a sh1te, are you planning terrorism? Are you watching and encouraging the production of child abuse? No! I think not.No problem with people tracking what you do on t’interweb if you aren’t doing owt wrong!
Ffs
Ah, yes, the “nothing to fear if you are doing no wrong” argument.
The fallacy of this is well established.
Boll@cks, I have worked in a number of roles which are aimed at catching “baddies”.
Your argument against this type of security is w@nk.
So many people who say this is a breach of our liberties, go on to say-
WTF have the police/security services done!
Usually I take this sort of descent into insult as a sign that I have won the argument.
History is riddled with instances where innocent people have been persecuted having done no wrong - from atrocities committed by the SS, Stasi & Volkspolizei to those who have conveniently “disappeared” in China for championing human rights.
Huffy, I take it, is a description of your personality?
Oooooh harsh, Paul,
First I must apologise for the comment to which you replied, it was wrong and should not have been sent.
“History is riddled with instances where innocent people have been persecuted having done no wrong - from atrocities committed by the SS, Stasi & Volkspolizei to those who have conveniently “disappeared” in China for championing human rights.
Please crawl back under whichever stone you slimed out from.
Huffy, I take it, is a description of your personality?”
Your last sentence is a little rude, however in response to the “door handle” remark- touché
I am not slime, I spent nearly 30 years as a police officer in the UK.
The ‘historical ‘ incidents you refer to, do not have anything to do with face recognition.
I want to preserve peace, love and life. I am a socialist, but also a realist.
Again I am sorry for the “door handle comment”
I do however feel that you owe me an apology too.
My name is Hough, I have always been known as “huffy”.
You have been very personal.
Good grief… I’ve only been away a few hours… and the heated posts in this thread have nearly set my computer on fire
Can we call it quits… and start the week afresh… please… ???
As a matter of interest, do we know how many/which countries already use the FCR technology… ???
