Family with youngsters arriving from Sweden - pool a disaster

We visited a friend yesterday who has been doing battle with her salt swimming pool all this year. Grandchildren will be arriving in 10 days and all her attempts to sort out the problems have come to nought so far.

I asked her to send me a run down of the issues so that I could ask our resident expert for any ideas. She can’t seem to find anyone locally to get to the bottom of the issues. I took a couple of photos. I’d be really grateful for any suggestions -
She copied me in on a letter she’s sent to a local pool man.

… You fixed the pool for her while I was taking over the house, installed a salt system etc. It has been working fine up to this spring.

In April xxxxx installed the pump system as usual, , pushed chlore chock etc, and I checked the water regularly as usual for salt, pH and chlorin. After a short time the water became cloudy.

On May 13th I called for help from xxxxxx. They recommended me to ad pH-, Antiphosphate, and Chlore lent , after that Clarifiant 2 pcgs. The engineer came here, a week later, looked at the system and said the electolyte cell was damaged beyond repair and needed to be replaced.

However, he cannot find a replacement cell.
Then I asked for a devis for a new system:

While the electrolysis was not working, since May I have been treating the pool continuously with Chlore Lent sticks.

Meanwhile , in June while I was gone, the pool turned horribly black on the walls . The stuff can be scraped off with a plastic tool, and leaves a brownish stain. The water is still cloudy. There is still a lot of algae in the filters.

To make things go from bad to worse , the robot stopped working yesterday.

Do I really need to get a whole new electrolysis system?
Can this black residue be removed before my family arrives in 10 Days?

This is the first major issue, continual use of packaged chlorine except liquid chlorine and calcium hypochlorite adds cyanuric acid stabiliser. This compound is needed but when the level gets too high the is not enough free active chlorine to clear and sanitise the water.
It really needs an accurate test of cyanuric acid level and definitely not using dip strips. A pool shop may help. If that is not an option then to bring down the level of cyanuric acid stabiliser (CYA) a partial drain and refill is the quickest option. Stop using packaged chlorine products and switch to brico shed javel in 20ltr bidons.
The cell could have stopped producing chlorine or the CYA level is so high the small amount of chlorine generated is insufficient to counter the stabiliser. There are aftermarket cell retailers that I have used on occassion to prevent the added expense of a whole new system. Details of the salt chlorinator would be helpful along with the water test redults. Size of the pool would also be useful.

Thank you for your response. My friend said a local man with a good track record is going to renovate the cell - it was heavily calcified. For the moment he sort out the chemistry as a chlorine pool , remove the deposits on the walls and lend her his robot.

Yes this happens and it causes a short circuit at the plate conections. On some they use an alternate arrangement to lessen the chance of a failure. Be interested in the follow up diagnosis from the local pool man please.

Yes I will provide an update in due course
