Filling out form 3916

Hello, this is my first tax season in France and I’m in the process of filling out form 3916 for my foreign accounts. However I do not have complete information for all of them. For a couple of them I am unable to get an account number because they’ve were closed early last year and for some reason the companies will not provide the account numbers to me.

For some other accounts, I am not able to find exact opening dates, is it ok to give a best guess?

Finally, if an account was closed before I arrived in France, does it need to be reported?

You do the best you can. And if need be explain lack of info in the “notes/mentions” box.

If an account was closed before you became full time resident in France, then No, it does not need to be reported.

If you have held an account for many years, then sure, it is OK to give your best guess as to the date it was opened.

As regards missing account numbers, do you not have any records (statements) that will show the account numbers ?

Basically, as Jane has said, just do the best that you can and explain why some details may be missing and all will be fine.

Reading this, I realise I did not see form 3916 when I sent off my impots. I have previously filled it out and there are no changes. Do I need to go back and do anything?

If you file online, it’s now incorporated in the main tax form 2042.

If nothing has changed, you don’t need to add any information. They almost certainly have your details from last year but if you want to check, log in and print off your tax summary for the return you’ve just submitted. It should show any mention of foreign accounts carried over from last year.

Many thanks for that assurance Helenochka.

RE: 2025 Filing 3916

Greetings,

So confuse a bit. On the form it asks for “address you live at January 1 of the year. QUESTION: is this the date for the current year where I reside now (2026) OR where I resided in 2025 ?

Thank You

Hi Welcome, good question, my answer is I think so, that’s what I’m going with - did you see -

My translation is -

“CHANGE OF ADDRESS: This is not my address as of 1 January 2026 (as I moved house in 2025) / I moved house in 2026”

I changed address in 2025 and updated the impot address, the address now showing is the one I’m in, so I went with ‘no change’.

I did get this pop up-

which I note is for 2025 or 26, I clicked no move, on the basis I already told them and nothing to update. I can’t see how a move would affect the return, (other than the deadline) other than that clicking yes would take one to a change of address form.
