First French tax return

Can some kind person tell me if I have this right?

We moved over on VLS-TS visituer visas last November. We do not work in France but I do go back to the UK and earn money there regularly.

So, I have to do a tax return as a household on paper - filling in forms 2042, 2042 NR, 2047, 3916?

I do already have an impots account from a previous holiday home (and now the bien immobilier for our new house) but I’m not seeing an option to do a tax return online. Will the paper form let me add my numbers so it all connects in the future?

Also, i don’t think the paper forms are online yet to download?

Sorry! Lots of questions. Thank you

I was also confused by this when I did my first tax return, and was told by my accountant at the time that the first time has to be done on paper, then it can be done online for subsequent years.

When it is available online, you should see a blue ‘Accéder à la déclaration en ligne’ button in your ‘personal space’ of the impots website.

You see that anyway, then click on it and it tells you that you need to do it on paper.

Welcome to SF!

Would you consider you are tax resident here in France? In other words is your main home is here/more than 183 days spent in France in a calendar year/your centre of economic interests are here?If not, then you shouldn’t need to file a return unless you have French source income.

Yes if resident here and a first year filer of.a tax return..A 2042NR is only due if you have taxable French source income in the part of the calendar year before you become resident (for a year of arrival) or you are non resident but have a taxable source of French income

I would assume so..The Impôts will key in your paper details and in due course issue you with an online copy (or at least they did with me).

Each year it seems that there are delays in issuing paper returns online to download - can’t really understand why, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to the Impots that paper returns will be needed, and of course there is a tight-ish deadline for filing them.

France will not directly tax your salary for work carried on wholly in the UK ,- but it will need to be declared.

Thank you. That is really helpful!

Yes we are here permanently.

To George’s point do make sure you properly check your tax residency. Between France and UK its not always that obvious - if you have sold up or tenanted out your Uk home and only have a home here then yes you probably are french tax resident…if you are going backwards and forwards as a family and especially still have a home you use in the uk then be very careful and check. Also make sure to fill in the right uk forms…or Hmrc may give you an unpleasant surprise.

Thank you.

No, we have no home in the UK. The only tie we have is when I work there.

Ok you are indeed likely French resident then with only one “foyer” …I would suggest though have a look online at what you need to declare where. HMRC of course will want their money for your work in the Uk…
