It’s more about posting it to Ireland and trying to get it back here to France. I’m a bit worried about the postal services between Eire and France. I’ve already had something go missing somewhere between France and the UK.
You need worry only about the outbound leg, since (I presume) they’ll send the data they recover to you electronically (and securely).

The data recovery company puts it on a USB stick and sends it via post. So unfortunately they don’t do it electronically (which I thought they would!}

Does your computer recognise other USB memory sticks ?
Have you tried it in a computer running Linux (open source operating system) ?

My laptop does recognise other USB sticks, and an external hard drive I have.
Unfortunately I don’t know anyone with a computer that runs Linux as my friendship base in France is very limited still.
