Hi I would be grateful for some advice. Scottish house sale going through and am in process of getting S1 and visa. Shippers will handle goods but which is the best way to get the 846A form for car and large trailer? We will be driving said car, do we have to be on same ferry as the removal van? or is there a better way?
The most important thing is that it must be on your inventory with your household goods. You only get to have one inventory and you can’t add to it later. Some shippers can be difficult and say you can’t do it but you can and you must so hold your ground. Otherwise you’ll be exposed to VAT and duty.
I can’t really help with the process on arrival.
Here’s a link to the customs website confirming that: Transferring your primary residence to France | Portail de la Direction Générale des Douanes et Droits Indirects
We found that the customs had discretion for genuine omissions. We missed the car from the inventory (so-called international specialist removal firm forgot to mention it) but a trip to the customs office in the wrong department (France Services sent us), an office which was not open for appointments (big sign on the door)
… and seeing an chap who poked his head out of the window and invited us in, and then undertook to sort it out even though he didn’t actually deal with cars …
It might have helped that several people were doing that thing that some of us don’t believe in.
It was definitely an occasion when the universal kindness of the French had another chance to help us.
