To be absolutely honest, Greek roots or no, I could not consider buying a book to help me learn a language written by someone using different versions of the language that I know - how could I possibly trust the words of the language that I’m trying to learn are correct?
Funnily enough these 3 large parcels arw from IKEA. It all starts with Chronopost which unfortunately gets the items for your order soon after you place it, and is supposed to send them correctly, to the delivery date agreed by IKEA. It’s Chronopost so….
I still have an incident open with IKEA where their delivery times went to nearly 4 months (from 6 days) then suddenly became 2 months without warning. I wss 20,000 miles away with my dying mother by then . A costly stressful nightmare to try to sort out snd despite earlier agreement when their multiple failures were pointed out to them, they agreed to a cash rrfund but shorted me on the amount and sent only a gift card (illegal to force as I hadn’t received the goods and the failures were multiple and theirs).
On all my calls to their custy services (often they are relatively helpful, for F) I’ve only just about refrained from telling them where they csn stuff their gift card and avoiding mentioning I’ll never set foot in an IKEA in France sgain.
IKEA has its faults but in other countries you can work with them. Like a few businesses I’ve come across same business run in France is a different experience (that’s putting it politely).
Good wishes received, with thanks and returned to you. ![]()
Although my first reaction is ‘good heavens is nothing sacred? I can’t trust Oxford anymore?’
, I must say, but don’t let anyone else hear this, I do have a sneaking approval for American spelling. It does seem more logical to me to use ‘z’ rather than ‘s’ in this context and save ‘s’ for ‘s’ sounds and ‘z’ for ‘z’ ones. Nevertheless, I am English and so, seeing memorize, does give me a knee jerk reaction against it, which is why I wondered if perhaps you might be one of the many American friends on here.
Sorry to say though that anything to do with memorising would be totally wasted on me as my memory is so bad now that a doctor has referred me for a brain scan tomorrow. Unless that turns up something really serious, like a tumour (my young brother died of such a thing at 47) I don’t expect to receive anything of value from it.
I wish you well, David, and hope the tests go well. Your posts seem decidedly compos mentis to me
Anyhow, “snap” medically, as I have a heart pacemaker due to be inserted on Monday (Age: 78). Began the book 10 years ago and finished it this summer. But I’ve said enough about it now, perhaps, and shall pipe down….
I’m sure that’s a wise decision ![]()
Christ. You poor thing. Have a stiff drink.
I think I remember now why we pretty much stopped buying stuff.
David- how do you feel about color vs colour, honor vs honour, etc. Asking for an American friend.
Hate it, and to hell with logicality. ![]()
Aye sorry.. I misread what you wrote.
I used to know David quite well, he spoke at some events of mine back in the day. His claim to fame is that he predicted the Celtic Tiger crash and the calamitous crash of the Irish housing market. He’s always a good read.
Restez calme et continuez ![]()
Can you tell my missus exactly how that works…please:rofl:![]()
Well worth listening to this recent episode of David’s podcast for his take on the current situation in France
I’ll listen to it on the way into town this afternoon Noel. Thanks.
The hotel owner also paid someone else 100 dollars with the customers money at the start.
Enjoyed that, thanks.
But, perhaps you shouldn’t try to impress those not in the know by appending ‘M.A Oxon’ to your SF posts. I prefer to avoid Wikipedia, but their explanation below is succinct and explains the irritation of many in academia who sweated for a year or two to get ‘real’ MAs.
In the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, and Dublin, recipients of the Bachelor of Arts (BA ) degrees can be promoted to the rank of Master of Arts (MA ) upon application after three or four years after graduation. *No further examination or study is required for this promotion, which is a mark of seniority rather than an additional postgraduate qualification.*[1][2][3] This system has sometimes caused confusion among employers, who may mistake the MA as an additional qualification.
Indeed.
Thanks. Most people know this, I think. I sweated for mine even so ![]()

To put qualifications and honorifics was a requirement at one point in the Amazon registration I remember, as was to (unusually) put all your names full out!
