Freely TV and VPN

All this stuff is complete mumbo jumbo to me so a couple of simple questions.
I have BBC Radio 4 on an internet radio from get up 'till go to bed, would that be affected if the worst should happen?

If I lost TV via satellite it would only be for the evening but would You Tube be affected as I use that a lot?

Here’s the 3rd of the couple, I have a Fransat box for French tv and radio, would that be lost?

Don’t worry about being technical, I would simply print off anything and take it down to Eddie.

Amazon UK have the Manhattan Aero, generally, but it is out of stock now. I probably want to somehow get one delivered to France, in the most likely event that I can’t get a satellite dish to work (due to obstruction) at my new place in Chars.

Thr smart DNS sounds good too. I dont know if I can edit that on my TV. This morning’s trip into town is for satellite cable as the current piece has degraded in the sun over the years, so it wasnt my Panasonic after all. Annoying as I have 50m drums of it back in the UK.

Thanks very much Hairbear, all understood, brilliant explanation, thanks.

Thanks Gareth.

The Manhattan Aero is on Amazon UK but only for delivery to a UK address. It disappears if you enter a French delivery address. I’m going over to the UK in two weeks and will get one for myself from Richer Sounds. I’d offer to get another but I’m flying with just a small backpack and OH already has a list of things to shoehorn in :scream:
Edit: It was back in stock when I looked a few minutes ago.

Many modern TVs allow you to change the DNS servers. If it’s android based it definitely should.

I remember a chap on another forum years ago who had a coat with loads of pockets so he could bring lots of things without going over the then 10kg bag allowance. His coat weighed another 10kg on its own :joy:

A few sellers have them on ebay too, around £95.

No worries, I have friends and family coming over. Otherwise I’m heading back for my mother’s birthday later in the year. Cheers.

we brought a freely box and vpn service from Brittany satellites, really easy to use, just plug in and play, we have never looked back, so much for old dish,

all we needed was a internet connection, and we are now looking at putting it our bedroom.

you can buy the freely box here in France, we got ours here:Internet TV – Brittany satellites

Does a Freely box have advantages over an Amazon Firestick.?

A firestick was available during the last Prime sale for under 30 euros. I am not sure how much a Freely box costs but it does seem to require an additional router to take the VPN.

hi the freely box streams with all tv and catch up and all apps, it is a lot better for uk tv, the vpn router we use is £15.00 per month., the freely box cost be £150.00 and £25 delivery no import.

regards

The Firestick does all that in a much neater package and a lot less cost. I am curious as to how it is better to justify that cost?

i had a fire stick before, the freely box is a lot nice to use and more reliable, it might be a preference for you, but i find it a lot better.

I am worried I might be missing out on something good. “a lot nicer to use” is rather subjective. Are you able to describe how it is better?

With the firestick you can just say “play Question Time” or whatever and away (to quote Bob Mortimer) you go. In my case I have a single remote that controls all my HDMI inputs.

Regarding reliability, I have never had a failure. Amazon provide excellent backup in case of failure under warranty.

The only hassle I have is changing VPN locations from time to time (especially after a football match has just started or the 5 F1 red lights have just gone off). Does the Freely box avoid this situation?

I hasten to add I am not a fan of Amazon business practices but I an just pragmatic when it comes to good service.

here is a link, might be better to have read:

I have a Firestick, but I have never set it up to watch UK TV channels because I currently have a 60cm dish and a Humax box. But I will soon be moving and I think putting up a dish will be challenging at best, and may be futile due to trees, so I am contemplating a Freely box.

I know it is possible to use a Firestick to get BBC and ITV channels, but the ones I most frequently watch are 5select, QuestHD, PBS America and some of the Us. Correct me if I am wrong, but I don’t think I can get most of those with a Firestick, can I?

I also have a satellite dish but it loses signal depending on weather conditions and doesn’t get catch up tv. We have gradually moved to firestick for everything

You already have a firestick so you can set it up where you live now. Meanwhile you have your dish as back up whilst you get the hang of it. Then simply move the firestick to your new location. It is very portable.

There are apps for the programs you want except Quest which you can watch via Discovery plus.

Personally, I would try this before shelling out 150 euros for a Freely box PLUS extra for a router which is suitable for the VPN you use.
