French banks in trouble - can Wine help?

Heartily agree… let’s face it, I may moan at my OH from time to time … but heaven help anyone who dares say a word against him…

Much more fun discussing Wine or Classics or Wine… or… :hugs: :hugs:

Not sure I agree. Currently watching gastronomic pornography on TV. There’s only so much of that I can take!

wine is better than gastronomic pornography… since too much wine simply sends me into a gentle slumber …whereas too much food simply gives me indigestion - no contest in my view… :hugs: and… I never get a hangover (much to the disgust of family and friends who do suffer with such things from time to time)

If the forum is going to continue like this, with people being so rude, I may not be the only one thinking we will stop taking part. I know it is a difficult time for everyone, but we could still be pleasant to each other.

Like you, I never became an alcoholic, because booze sends me to sleep too quickly. I also never lie because I blush too easily. So there is no merit in either.
But I always like to remind my wine snob friends that, no matter how much you pay for the bottle, it is all the same to your liver.

Hi Sandra… are you thinking of particular threads or particular people…???

Personally, I have stopped looking at all the Coronavirus threads for the sake of my sanity.

You can do likewise… or you can “mute” a person or a thread…

I thought we had just agreed that we would try to be nicer to one another. But a bit of lively debate and banter is part of the fun. Has someone said something that you find personally offensive?

so I won’t bore you as to why I am a minor expert on this topic but… you have nothing to worry about. French banks are hugely healthier than, say, German banks… DB is by far the sickest bank in Europe. Overall, the real danger to the French economy is defined benefit pension plans–which suck up about 14% of GDP–in short, people with long lifespans get a lifelong check for 20 years as a public servant–this is, in the long run, totally unsustainable–Macron and everyone who knows finance grasps this–but no one is going to be the person who cuts his own free lunch for the social good. Banks are good. You have almost zero risk. ECB is a rock… and even if Coronabonds become a limited reality, a default in future of true Euro bonds is unlikely–if Italy, etc. try to game it, that will be the last deal of its type–just as Argentina now knows that if it ever defaults again, they are out of the bond market for 20 years.

We bought several cases of a white wine from the Loire area when on holiday in 1989. We had our 5 month old grandson with us and the proprietor’s wife said they were putting that year’s wine down for their daughter’s wedding as the previous year when she was born, the wine was not so good. Our grandson is now 31 years old and we still have two bottles left, after opening one earlier this week. It was excellent, clear, bright and a beautiful rich golden colour but felt a lot stronger than the 11.5% vol the label portrayed. I would never have thought a relatively cheap white wine would have stored so well.

Yes, I agree. I have been buying wine to keep since I lived in the Tarn; now I live in the Lot et Garonne but I i still love Gaillac wine from Lidl at less than €4 to drink now.

Yes, we have always thought that white wines had to be drunk young… but have (like you) been pleasantly surprised… :relaxed: :relaxed: :upside_down_face:

and it is very satisfying when a cheap wine is praised by friends who have no idea of it’s price but merely that it tastes good !!! :hugs:

There comes a time when “buying to keep” risks turning into “buying wine for other (possibly unknown) people to enjoy”. :upside_down_face:

which is why we are working our way through our accumulation …

Just the general tone. To an outsider, does not sound like banter. Try reading afresh.

If they really were labelled Scotch Whiskey it must have been a scam.

Ah yes, my mistake… Whisky - thanks for the correction
