I have mentioned previously that I rent a “cloud” server (actually 2 but I’m planning to get rid of the “old” one) which is physically located in France. For anyone who is interested it’s 23 quid a month for a completely bare metal, physical server which has an Intel Xeon E3-1200 - 4 cores, 8 threads, 4.2GHz turbo with 32GB of RAM and 4TB of disk space (two 2TB drives). I think it is fair value for the money.
Anyway, after a bit of swearing I have a Wireguard VPN set up and chez moi in the UK have a Wi-Fi SSID which, when you connect to it, gives a “French” Internet connection.
Why? You may ask.
Well, one reason was a dry run with a modern VPN protocol to provide a VPN in France that I can use for UK catch up but a side effect is that I can sign up for French catch-up TV which, in turn, will give me easier access to some much needed listening practice.
So, I have signed up for TF1 and France2 - who else should I go for?
Random observation: why, in my early 60’s and a lifelong heavy metal fan am I only now discovering Rammstein??? It’s almost enough to make me want to learn German.
Not an easy question to answer for French TV. Anything and everything - just after links to sign up.
What I need is dialogue, so current affairs debates etc are good but I’m not averse to decent drama - especially if the platform can give me French subtitles.
I like RMC (Radio Monte Carlo) it’s also TV. I used to like Molotov TV app that I think I found via thread on Orange user forum - French forums will tell you what people are watching
Molotov is a bit dead now as lost lots of free stuff but sonething will have replaced it. They used to have lors of bought-in international series like runs of the various NCIS’s.
TBH I far prefer the choice on German TV to France or even the UK.
Why don’t you just listen to the radio, a channel like France Culture has a bit of everything, this is from wiki… Its programming encompasses various features on historical, philosophical, sociopolitical, and scientific themes (including debates, discussions, and exciting documentaries), as well as literary readings, radio plays, and experimental productions. The channel is broadcast nationwide on FM and is also available online.
Agreed, but this is more for my language skills than televisual enjoyment per se. Quite a lot is dubbed English language stuff anyway - which, obviously, I wish to avoid.
M6 is being odd, it gives me “Désolé, cette vidéo n’est pas accessible dans votre pays” even directly logged in to the French server, but it won’t let me sign in on the tablet or laptop even though they are connected via the VPN - doesn’t reject the login, just never displays the log in page. As I said, odd. I wonder if it sniffed a UK IP address when I set up the account and it steadfastly sticking to that even though I’m logging in from “France”
I was going to suggest M6 as well, but I’ve also found it impossible to get to load when outside France, even with a French VPN, so not sure what’s going on there.
It doesn’t want to know even though I am using a remote desktop connection to the machine in France who’s browser has never had a sniff of a UK IP address.
I’m assuming that it recognises the IP as a hosting service rather than a regular ISP.
Arte has a huge amount of quality programmes on a wide variety of subjects. It’s a large site to explore
It’s mainly in French and one can usually choose the subtitle language - I always use French because my reading is much more developed than my listening.
PS they e-mail a list of upcoming programmes every Sunday.
