They are Mustelids aren’t they?
I know. I worry for him/her but the squirrel seems to know how to deal with such things. Being exactly the same colour as the tree bark helps. He/she flattens itself against the trunk and stays completely still when danger (eg magpies) get close. Planting nuts, digging them up again, and running around the treetops or across the grass is always done at supersonic speed. If you see him, look away, and look up again, the squirrel has long gone.
They are long and thin, I believe up to 60cm with even more cm for the tail. I read that they are discreet so I was lucky to get the photo.
I believe the rule is “If it has round eyes it is safe, if it has slant eyes you are already too close”
I was weeding along the boundary wall we have built for the fence at the rear of the property and saw something bright green on the fence privacy strips. It was a praying mantis, a fairly big one and the first I have seen down here so they obviously thrive but hide away unlike the dozens of little lizards and crickets that are so cute you want to pet them.
