Take a look at my wonderful two seedlings! Ok this is nowhere near the Wozza land of bounty but I am very pleased as these are two kalettes and I was beginning to despair of them germinating.
Thanks @AngelaR for the seeds!

Yes and no l, nothing there!
Only had it about 10 days, normal tap water once, then rain.
Actually it could be this, I put it outside straight away with all the others but mine have been outside the whole time so didn’t think about it
. There hasn’t been a lot of sun but probably some!
I bought 6 calabrese plants which I managed to plant out with some peas, so nice to see things in the ground!
Rainwater good.
Well, they’re ahead of mine! It’s been so cold and unpleasant, I’m well behind in my seed sowing. Generally speaking things tend to catch up, but we’ll see…
I’m quite pleased with my seedlings this year, not everything has worked but a lot has!
Have had to buy some tomatoes, cougetttes and sweet potato but saved a lot. Weirdly my Lilliput zinnias all worked but the bigger ones didn’t! None of my asters, echinacia and some other flowers came up. Going to resow, may have been too early!
Yesterday I got in 14 tomatoes, and a couple of days ago 6 calabrese. So nice to see them all! I hope my risk with the tomatoes will pay off. I put a small amount of mainly rotted down sheep manure at the bottom of the hole, then covered with some soil so not in direct contact, however there are the odd bits of fresher stuff in there, hoping it won’t cause issues ![]()
Get some of those cheap bamboo kebab sticks you get on the market stall in packs. Put them in the ground pointed side up with about half above the ground. Put them six inches apart. No more cats digging up your plants or soil
.
That’s a great idea, I trid plastic forks years ago and I’m still finding them ![]()
Does anyone know if holly works?
I’m pretty certain that mandarin and orange peel in small pieces scattered around works on our local feral cats.
What a great idea - and much cheaper than the anti personnel mines I have been considering (and more neighbour friendly!)
What about creating more attractive alternative facilities on their route to your veg patch? A nice private space sprinkled with a bit of catnip from time to time? They are creatures of (more or less) habit so if you can break the habit and establish a new one it might work and everyone will be happy.
That’s an interesting idea @JaneJones - especially if there aren’t all that many cats. We have a huge number that seem to have adopted our garden and it looks like they indulge in competitive pooing on the edges of routes - I didn’t know cats did that!
Trying to get a cat to do what you want is like knitting with spaghetti ![]()
Totally agree, but trying to get them to do what they want is much easier. So you need to provide something they want more than your veg patch.
I think not having a sore bum is something they wany more ![]()
Hi Haibear, I’ve bought 160 of them! What distance works please?
You’re just trying to make me jealous! Ours are only just above ground.
I have fine peas growing in the garden among the wildflowers, I chucked those rejected by the hens in the grass for someone else to eat not thinking they would sprout!
A free feast!
