I strongly recommend getting a Butagaz Viseo gas bottle - plastic, clear sections so you can see whether the bottle is empty, much easier to carry when full.
Is that swappable at a Carrefour etc. or do you have to go to a specialist to get it refilled?
Thanks very much for all your help. We’ve reached a truce - I won’t kick it and it won’t gas me - but I’m going to have another go this afternoon.
Not every supermarket stocks Butagaz products but our local Leclerc does and so does the Carrefour in the next town. 17 years ago when I was 60 I could lift a full metal gas bottle, these days I’m grateful for the lighter weight of the Viseos.
Thanks Sue!
We should probably note for bottled gas newbies (hello @Porridge!) that propane (orange bottles) and butane (blue bottles) are not directly interchangeable - they need the corresponding dedicated regulator. So if you wanted to take @suePJ’s suggestion you would need to remove the orange/red propane regulator and fit a butane one in its place.
The appliances are usually OK with either gas (once the correct regulator has been fitted), but check the instructions!
Also butane can be stored inside whereas propane should only be stored outside.
The Antargaz Calypso bottle that @Porridge has is butane. I know, it’s confusing as there doesn’t seem to be any standardisation of colours between different companies, or even different ranges for the same company. Some propane 13 kg cylinders are red, some are blue, and some are blue and silver. Other colours are also available.
In the UK, it’s a bit more sensible.
There are a lot of different colour combinations in South Vienne. Locally blue for butane. Blue and silver for propane.
All flammable gasses should be stored outside when not in use, but butane can and in many cases is held inside when in use because liquid butane starts to freeze only a few degrees below zero Celsius and stops flowing properly. Propane is very happy outside all the time.
Those are the Butagas 13 Kg cylinder colours. Antargaz is different
And if your not confused already Antargaz butane can be red or blue
Ah there you go - I was assuming it was the same as UK practice! Dumb of me of course!
As I said, in the UK its sensible. You can get all sorts of funky colours in France. Gold anyone ?
Always worth popping into SF for a multitude of educational moments!
As is the UK standard of having opposite handed threads for the bottle connections of the two different types.
Even a boring beige if like me you are watching the pennies. They are inter marches own brand and quite a bit cheaper!!
Is that cheaper than Leclerc Clairgaz?
Not sure, I think its 23e for a 13kg.
If you’re referring to this regulator it’s for butane. If so be careful what you post, you can cause some serious damage type BooM & no more house!
Thank you for the correction - I hadn’t appreciated that such things were not standard between France and the UK (or EU and UK).
But someone posted above that the fitting threads were different between propane and butane anyway?
