Gas bottle problem

We have butane and propane cylinders for different gadgets here in France. The two bottles have the same thread, so it is possible to fit the wrong regulator.

Yes, the threads are mainly different now… But… L-hand / R-hand but regulators whatever colour also usually come with a nozzle adapter that you can stuff a bit of piping and secure with a circlip.

Blimey, I paid €41,90 last week for a 13kg bottle from Butagaz! :sob:

I just checked and see I paid €32.95 for 13kg of Butagaz in Saintes 2 weeks ago. Although I have a big gas hob I mostly use induction indoors and haven’t changed that in over a year. Outside I have a plancha and a gas BBQ which both need changing usually once a year (always in the middle of having friends round) so I keep a spare bottle to hand. As it is convenient to just use butane (the kitchen supply is indoors) I stick to the same for all, but really propane is better for outdoors, especially in winter for the plancha.

€41.90 for Butagaz seems steep but I note from the Butagaz website that distributors set their own prices - maybe you need to shop around, Gareth.

Our automated gas distributor at Utile/superU charges about €42 for a 13kg refill. It is convenient though…

Ouch!!! I knew the IM was cheaper but that’s a huge difference,! I am the queen of bargain hunting :rofl::rofl:
I currently have a bottle in the boot so I’ll double check the price when I go!

this forum has been really helpful. I didn’t know about the little button on the underneath of the detendeur, so that solved my problem this morning as to why my gas wouldn’t work. I paid 75 euros for 2 20kg bottles of butane and a subscription for each one… ( mad) … So it seems my gas is cheaper that what I have seen on this forum. I’m in 12300. Point of note in case it’s been missed, Butane will freeze Propane won’t … Propane can be safely stored outside, Butane should only be stored indoors… So I have been told.

Near St Christophe?

We’re the other side of Decaz in the Lot valley. Our walking group hasn’t been over your way for a while, but I’m sure we’ll be walking from Marcillac/St Christophe/Clairvaux in the coming months - if you’re interested let me know and I’ll let you know when - the group walks are Weds mornings with two groups in summer -10kms and +10kms. Picnic afterwards.

It maybe a long shot but I have a couple of unwanted gas bottles going free if someone can collect. I am 50 km SW of Toulouse direction St Gaudens. One is Butane and nearly full, the other is Propane and empty. Both come with regulators.

Just cooking lunch and the gas bottle in the cupboard ran out. OK, no problem I thought, got a spare in the garage (these are the screw valve 13kg butagaz bottles). Lugged it in, connected it up, turned it on and no gas . Lugged it back outside, tried the valve and some gas comes out but then stops as its opened further.

This is now the 3rd time this has happened (I have the receipt so will take it back later) in the last year and not just butane as the BBQ gas had the same problem. I reckon there’s a load of dodgy valves - anyone else had a similar problem?

Maybe the reset button on the regulator needs depressing or it is jammed?…dunno, just a thought

^^^ THIS ^^^

Always press the reset button the regulator after swapping over to a new cylinder.

There isn’t one (old type screw on regulator), and only very low pressure gas comes out if the valve is opened without the regulator screwed on.

Do you mean the little button on the underside of the regulator outlet?
Problem is definitely with the cylinder valve.

Does anyone know how to get rid of an old gas cylinder?
It’s Monogas and no-one is interested in exchanging it.
It was in the garage when we bought the house.
The decheterie refuses all cylinders.

Isn’t there a security thing where you have to turn a knob half a turn then back again about half way between the bottle and the cooker, probably hidden.

The problem is the valve on the top of the cylinder. If its opened fractionally (less than 1/8 of a turn) enough gas at a suitable pressure comes out, any more than that something in the valve moves, maybe a seal, and blocks the flow of gas.

We too had a couple in the garage that have been there for years. Fortunately our local Leclerc has its gas bottles in racks on a part of their land away from the main store. I just waited until late evening and took the bottles and left them alongside the racks. I was not the only one to have done that, there were already a couple of bottles there.
