General technical queries - ask here!

I use it to connect with friends, here, to track the pounds changing value to pick a time to transfer, emails, and as a conduit to my external drives to monitor my life in general.

I understand nothing as long as it still works, and it does with a few glitches like this, and the thought of ‘learning’ something new fills me with dread. In short, as long as this keeps working, with the aid of kind advice I will continue with what is still working.

Sorry, wrong photo…

IBM S/360 probably running TOS (Tape Operating System). Less processing power than my new Alexa friendly kettle.

Just think what he could have done with today’s technology.

Shame that the recommended tape head cleaner back in the day was carcinogenic AF.

Careful - someone might resurrect Orac’s personality for AI interfaces

And it couldn’t make tea either.

If you ‘ve forgotten to fill your Alexa kettle does it warn you when you ask it to switch on?

I’m sorry John, I’m afraid I can’t do that …

Might be of interest to those, like me, who didn’t get round to upgrading their Windows 10 machines yet…

…although I don’t log in using a Microsoft account :person_facepalming:

Ten years a’patching, and still not secure :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

This one will make you scream …

In fairness, Linux too has it’s issues . It’s not had as many issues in part because it’s never been as big a target. Whether it is intrinsically more secure as some suggest because of ‘many eyes’ is debatable.

Still amateur night in Redmond.

I’m revising my backup strategy, I was a fool to think Onedrive might be secure.

Exactly. John, you should have known better. You are too cynical not to have your doubts and to know better. We will NEVER, EVER put anything in the cloud. Everything remains on our computers.

Can either of you tell me what One Drive is please, I have only just noticed the icon on my newly arrived W11 taskbar?

OneDrive is cloud storage. You get a certain amount free. If you want to pay to get more, you can.

I’ve been using various sorts of cloud storage for years.

I’ll just consider it a file sharing mechanism from now on. Which is all I really wanted it for originally, so back to the future.

I’ll leave it alone then, no need for such things with little hard drives easily able to save stuff to.
