Going on Holiday - But Where?

After a very long stretch of solid work, I have finally found some time and even a little money to go away - entirely by myself - for a couple of days R&R.

Partly because my passport has expired and partly because I don't relish driving more than 90 minutes or so, I shall be travelling no further that than one of the départements neighbouring the Vendée: Charente, Charente-Maritime, Maine et Loire, Deux Sèvres & Loire-Atlantique.

Being dull & middle aged, I am not looking for wall-to-wall fleshpots and dens of vice & iniquity. Not on my budget, anyway.

Rather, I am looking for a small town with half-decent hotel, a couple of interesting churches, a dusty museum that the kids can't nag me out of and a choice (ie more than one) of bars / restaurants.

Anyone got any suggestions?

La Rochelle, a bit big but has a lot.

Saintes - right size and loads to see, brilliant Romanesque architecture etc.

Saint Jean d'Angély - smaller still, perhaps too small, but worth a look/walk round

Enjoy ;-)
