I couldn’t find the original good news discussion so here’s a new one, I am feeling very lucky, on my way to work on Thursday my car was slammed into laterally by a Nissan Qashqai and I’m not dead - I was only in hospital for the day and I’ve only got a million bruises and broken arm. I didn’t even get airbag-burn. Hooray!
Car is almost certainly a write-off though.
Oh no! Sorry to hear about your accident but glad you came off relatively lightly.
Blimey! Sounds awful but so glads you are relatively ok and a broken arm is better than a broken leg but still….
Hope you have lots of nice painkillers and get well soon xx
Good news indeed that you ‘only’ have a broken arm and bruises. Alternative outcomes don’t bear thinking about. Get well soon.
Oh heavens Vero, so sorry to hear that! Take care of yourself over the coming days - as shock tends to creep up after the initial adrenaline rush.
Whilst a broken arm is better than what might have been, it’s still a real nuisance - do you get a goodly time off from work?
Dare one ask about the other driver?
Take care and get well soon. A broken arm is inconvenient but as @cat says, it’s better than a broken leg.
Now you have the fun side to look forward to - insurance paperwork, getting another car, red tape…
Love from Rachel xx
Hi Vero, very sorry to read about your accident - if your experience is anything like ours of a month ago, you’ll still be slightly in shock and there’s a million forms and pieces of paper floating around that need to be completed. Unfortunately, you’ll also probably be out of pocket for a while, so keep every single receipt for expenses incurred and claim for everything, no matter how small! After four and a half weeks we’ve already incurred over €1000 in unwanted costs, plus having to withdraw from our savings to to buy a replacement car. Also even though the accident was in no way our fault, we’ve had to take out a new insurance policy, which is €120 more a year, and which we’re going to try and claim for too.
The day after our accident I wrote a very detailed account of what had happened, while everything was still fresh in my memory. I’ve since used this document with the insurance company and the police.
With a broken arm maybe you can get your doc to write a prescription for a femme de menage for a couple of month’s of house work duties.
We finally had our ‘conversation’ with the police yesterday, it lasted an hour and a half and they were both sympathetic and practically helpful.
Hope things go smoothly from here and as you note, you’re alive and with no permanent life changing injuries
@Vero need more. What exactly happened? Detail please, if you’re well enough to tell us.
Also @DrMarkH - did you manage to get any more from the police as to.what was the reason the other driver made the manoeuvre that caused your accident?
The other driver is fine, shaken but that’s all. She drove straight into me going at I don’t know what speed, the front of her car is gone.
On way to work, had an hour to do 25 kms so no rush. Stopped at stop, looked both ways, cars were far away, started crossing and BANG, spun round 360°almost on spot, ended up facing as I had been but moved a couple metres max. Pompiers got me out, I got them to photograph my car. The other car hit me pretty much at level of my front tyre, the side of my (very long) bonnet smashed, no impact damage to front of my car. Other car about 40 or 50m down road in ditch, front gone, front airbags deployed. Only my left lateral airbag deployed. My car is very heavy, luckily for me.
The other driver tried saying I drove into her but er no, not possible and thank goodness I got the photos. Other driver was running late for 8.30 meeting, coming from a good 3/4 of an hour away.
But I was coming from small road to cross bigger one so not looking good for me.
So you pulled out slowly after stopping and checking both ways, road was clear for at least 3/4 of a km snd yet she was going so fast that in less than the time you were on her side of the road after coming out, her car ate up 3/4km snd hit you without her seeing you?
Did she attempt to brake?
Sounds like min.90kph
What was the speed limit
?
Speed limit 80, she didn’t brake, I would have heard it. First I knew was BANG and I was spinning wondering wtf was happening. It’s the first car accident I have had.
PS Now seen photo. Looks like she hit you coming from your left, on the side of the road nearest (RHS-) just after you pulled out?
Sorry about the Merc, btw. Those are good ones.
Yes exactly. So somehow I didn’t see her (daylight, straight line, notorious road). Or she was going much faster than she thinks/claims. Anyway all in hands of insurance now.
You didn’t see her; or she was going far too fast and didn"t see you?
It takes a h*ll of a speed to make that kind of dent in a Merc that’s at 90 degrees to you, or is even beginning to turn Right, away from you. For sure > 80kph.
Was LHS when stopped checking, 3/4km clear road, or was it more clear road?
Id say 750m clear. It’s a dangerous intersection and there are accidents all the time, I take it every day and never get blasé about the scariness. That’s why I leave an hour early to go to work.
I agree about the dent/speed thing - I heard a couple of things when her fireman was reporting to mine but I’m not going to quote them, it’s hearsay anyway.
For protection, it’s a bit extreme but personally I’d get my eyes checked snd maybe ask doc to physically examine as well im order to deny anything they might try… but that’s just me
Why is road notorious? At that spot, or generally? where was the sun
Unlike the other driver censored. I was wearing my specs. Sun was behind cloud and I was driving due west. Got complete check in hospital, bloods, x ray, pet scan.
I hope the insurance companies don’t settle knock for knock. Lucky you were not in a light vehicle.
Yes exactly, I sometimes take my daughter’s tiny lancia to exercise it. Shudders.
