Help/advice needed on setting up my garden maintenance business

Hi,

Any help is welcome.

My family is moving to 01 Ain, France next year.
I already have clients lined up for my business, but don’t have a clue how to set it up legally.

What do I need to do to register?

What will I have to pay out?

I have an Irish and English passport.

Thanks

Best

Will

Hi,

Thanks so much for the help… I’m a bit worried that I won’t be able to start my business.

Have you already done this kind of work?
What qualifications do you have ??

I have 5 years experience and no qualifications in this field.

I have all the tools and clients waiting for me in France.

Do I need qualifications?

Heaven’s above! In 2019 do people seriously say that women are not advised to become gardeners, but should opt for being a florist!!! Whoever “Olivier” is, he should never be allowed to give advice again.

The second article is much more sensible, and explains how to set up as an AE to be able to be a gardener. Which is broadly what I had understood in that market gardening, gardening services and the like are agricultural. You can do it, you just have to do it the French way.

Hi,

Thanks for the info.

What do you mean the French way?

I have the clients waiting, so I can’t see why I need qualifications.

I also have 5 years experience in England.

Becoming a self employed small business in the UK is easy. You just do it, tell HMRC, and decide which NI class you need to pay. In France it is a different process, requiring registration, getting SIRET numbers, etc etc. Labour laws are quite fierce so best to do it right, but lots of guides available if you do a google search.

That is not how we do things here. We like people to jump through a few hoops, get a few qualifications, cross Ts and dot Is. You may have 5 years’ experience in England, that cuts no ice with us.
Seriously, get yourself up to speed with the rules - life will be better for you.

Hi,

I understand that it’s a different country and culture, but why would I not be able to work for clients that want my service :joy:. I don’t understand that.

I already have the work waiting. I can earn and pay tax straight away.

If you aren’t qualified, registered, ‘en règle’ you can’t work. Your clients have to pay social charges, you have to be insured etc etc etc.

Anyone employing you until you have a siret is breaking the law, not just you.

That’s why I’m asking how to sort it out before I start.

I can’t see why the French government won’t let someone work with no qualifications when they aren’t needed.

I’m confused.

Do I need qualifications to work as a self employed gardener/general maintenance.

Thanks

Thanks for your help! You are all very kind…

I’m sure there will be more questions as I work through the process.

It’s very exciting too.

Best

Ha ha… I see what you mean Jane  Ooops. Still, it does give an outline… :upside_down_face::wink::sweat_smile::sweat_smile:

I was trying to find something for William to look through…
