Arguably yes, but worth a lot to the UK in terms of tourist dollars and “soft power”.

All royal families contain their share of pillocks, as any student of history can tell you.

There are various statistics that say this is the case, and various statistics that say it isn’t. It makes no sense to me personally that people wouldn’t come if the actual people weren’t there given almost no one sees them, they see the buildings and history, and the ceremony, all of which could continue without the humans, but I’m happy to believe some do actually feel that the people make the experience and think that way. But I really think we should avoid saying this sort of thing as I just don’t see evidence to back it up. purely to the tourism, the soft power is obviously another thing entirely.

I do tend to agree with @tim17 though, if they don’t cost a fortune and don’t overreach their place into the running of the country (which of course the current king has sought to do in the past), it’s a big old ‘who cares’

“wrong”, no, it’s your opinion in an area where one is entitled to one. But it is harsh.

Live and let live. To my mind, it is what it is that they, in particular Meghan, have a lifestyle that’s dependant on publicity/social media. So Instagram posts and the BBC covering them is to be expected.

As to Harry being an idiot - like all of us, he is knowledgeable in some areas and less so in others. I can’t fly a helicopter for instance but I wouldn’t consider myself an idiot because of that.

Leave them be, forget about them. They’re doing nobody any objective harm - and I say that as neither royalist nor fan of Meghan Markle (I recall her mainly as an actress in Suits , I think it was)

I knew a well known publicist, now dead. His job involved 1) keeping the crappy things a, b and c listers did out of the news and therefore not being talked about and 2) keeping a, b and c listers in the public eye and being talked about.

Unfortunately, things went a bit wrong when the publicist was the one being talked about. I think he would definitely have disagreed with Wilde.

Obviously you can only go off what you read, but I think the main issue with Megan was she expected her life to be one of a Disney princess.

She probably didn’t envisage the real life of public service such as going and cutting a ribbon on a drug rehabilitation centre in Sunderland etc..

I am sure the inside of many of the royal estates were quite a shock for her too.

I seems there whole life is about creating attention, for themselves, I just wish the media would stop talking about them.

I have always felt we need a Royal Family, perhaps even more so now, as a backstop for any truly crazy political party. The invisible walls of stability as it’s called.

But I can also fully appreciate the argument against them too.

I am just not sure what we would gain if they were gone, and we could potentially lose a lot more.

The late Queen, no doubt on the advice of her entourage, did not exercise her ancient rights and demand a legally binding referendum to confirm the decision to implement Brexit. In my opinion the Royal circus failed in the hour when they were most needed and betrayed us.

There was a lot of this at the time - The Queen should do this, that or the other. There has been a bit for Charles as well. When are people going to get it into their heads that the monarch has no actual power? At all. Non. Zip, Nil. Nada.

I worked for someone who sacked their head of PR as soon as their name appeared in the Sunday Times Rich List.

I gather that the entire job of the head of PR was to ensure that the family received zero publicity. Apparently quite a lot of lunches etc. took place each year with people such as newspaper editors, precisely to achieve this aim.

As soon as this happened the head of PR, who came from a fairly well known other firm, was sacked.
