Exactly why I suggested getting a new battery. Cars like the leaf for example came with smaller batteries that a larger new battery pack can be fitted into.
Last week I had to drive to Saintes. It’s not really that far, only about 40KMs each way. We went cross country going there (cause I took a wrong turn!) but coming home was mostly motorway driving. That was the first time I’ve taken our EV on the Autoroute so I was curious to see how they car would cope compared to my usual driving around town / short journeys on a RN.
Annoyingly I didn’t turn the engine off once we got there. My other half had an appointment but I stayed in the car listening to the radio… so the Kia app thinks my 80KM journey took me 3h20 ![]()
I’ve not had range anxiety since picking the car up, but I was kinda surprised to see how much quicker the battery drains when doing 135 130KMh. I’m no Carol Vorderman but I think that’s about 15.5kWh/100km. We only have a 44kWh battery, and we don’t need to use the motorway much luckily.
Same with the internal combustion engine, there’s quite a difference between 110 and 130, it’s just not displayed right under your nose with the same precision.
On a good steady run, my bus can do 42mpg but at 130 kph you can watch the gauge dropping ![]()
But batteries are more expensive than whole cars, aren’t they
!?
No, they are not, & many upgrades can be obtained from used batteries recovered from crash damaged newer cars.
Clearly there are additional costs involved in the actual act of swapping the battery.
I could see a hitch hikers guide moment happening.
Exactly, a place in Kent removed an old battery pack (24kw) possibly and fitted a 38kw in its place from memory, quite a range increase.
Of course Main Stealers see people coming and charge manufacturers full price then trousering the money they get for selling the old pack.
Note that cut out Tesla from the choice as they only let their garages work on them or they may turn your car off.
That is great to hear. I have everything crossed I can get one on leasing social.
This is what the man shape wants to do.
I am being a bit thick today but I can’t make the connection between your suicidal car and The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Perhaps Stephen King’s “Christine” would be more appropriate.
I was feeling a bit like laying in front of a bulldozer that represented progress, while talking to someone who built bypasses, and who was really quite keen to knock my house down. At least there’s no Vogon constructor fleet.
Yes, good point. They should make a digital display that resembles an old fashioned display instead of a percentage ![]()
You have my sympathy. As the guy who bangs the first pegs in the ground, I used to get a lot of flak from people losing a bit of their property. Despite lucrative offers, it was above my pay grade to change anything. Having said that, I did move the M5 to a position 18 inches from its planned position without anyone knowing.
Himself or via knowledgeable people who do it for a living?
Irrespective of the type of Vechicle energy consumption increases as the CUBE of the speed .. eg each doubling of speed increases consumption by a factor of 8. .It has nothing to do with the engine revs or torque curves.. they are additional , it is purely the air resistance element …
I think you’ll find that rolling resistance varies linearly with speed, but air resistance varies as tbe square of the speed, not as the cube.
The air resistance is indeed Mass by speed squared..Since this is what has to be pushed out of the way and is the force .but the object is not static and is doing work the distance against the force is work and velocity or speed is distance over time .. , Hence Power or work expended per unit time is the. CUBE . So double the speed uses power at 8 times , but you get to the destination in 1/2 the time.
I think he wants to do what he can himself, there’s lots of into from Leaf fanatics and people doing it. Buying the new cells ect . Not sure, I just smile and nod ![]()

I live in rural (very rural) France. Do you seriously think a white line on a narrow road put there 5 years ago is going to take account of traffic and weather conditions on this day?
I was trained to drive by a former ambulance driver. (And some say it shows.) But he was always safety first He told me to pull out going slightly over a white line in the middle of the road as there was a car parked blocking all available space. I protested “there’s a white line there and we can’t cross it”. He said “but the car was put there after the white line”. In other words, within reason drive according to the conditions.
That bl00dy hire car’s overcorrection was far more likely to cause an accident than avoid one in real world non-motorway conditions. When I took the car back the hire co said everybody complained about it but it was their policy to provide a car with all safety aids on, which I actually agree with as a starting point.
Mass has nothng to do with air resistance.
