So you are suggesting a cubing of energy used? Over a given time???
But ignore that the time taken for a given distance is halved at double the speed?
Energy/fuel consumption is about consumption and distance: typically mpg or l/100km
Fuel burn per hr is common in shipping and aviation, but they are a different case, since the vehicles there are not moving on land, but through media that is in itself not stationary.
I had that question on my driving test, back in the early 1400s. Being unsure of the answer I insisted that you are not supposed to cross the line, and the examiner gave me the benefit of the doubt and I passed the test.
Definitely not guilty. This happened where the M4 and M5 cross at the Almondsbury Interchange. I set out the M5 North accurately only to find the newly constructed interchange had been built 18 inches out of position. They refused to knock it down and rebuild it correctly so I was asked to bodge it.
It will not steer you off the road ..when it sees the ditch it will shudder to move you back a little . Of course you can override these ..a firm hand is enough …
My initial response was that POWER consumption increased as the Cube of the Speed .. because t instantaneous power consumption is what is displayed on the dash of an EV.. And yes the exact same situation pertains in aircraft and and ships ..and it refers to the relative movement through the medium ..which in the marine case is 1000 times .
denser.
Those of us who cycled in our youth are very familiar with the effects of head winds ,still air and following winds.
Same Physics , same results .. .
I would not trust it to identify a ditch , and that’s not an experiment I’m willing to try. As pointed out, this is not an autonomous vehicle, and to treat it that way would be ‘unwise’.
All I am saying is that my VW identifies road markings , verges and basically anything different and makes it’s displeasure known …But cannot report what it cannot see .. so if you actually wanted to defeat it so it would turn off .and give no help or hindrance . a tiny bit of black tape over the lens …or less overtly .. a smear of vasiline on the windscreen in front of the camera .. My VW tells me when it is disabled if the demister has not cleared that section
Just come back across countryside from Villeneuve. The D roads are narrow, badly cambered with poor edges - either hidden curb stones or tarmac that’s breaking up and leaving holes. They are also empty.
In some places the roads are just wide enough for the department to have put lines down the middle.
I despair of the constant nagging from our Citroen Aircross, as I use the roads wisely, moving towards the middle when I have a clear view so that the journey is less bumpy and I’m in less danger of getting a puncture. Each time I do so and there is a white line of dashes, I am yelled at.
In fact the nagging is distracting and I drive less well because I am on edge all the time. I can only turn off the lane control at the start of a journey. As soon as I turn the engine off it automatically resets.
As the Germans say:
Verschlimmbesserung: an improvement that actually makes things worse
I’m going to have to develop that muscle memory that automatically makes me swipe and tap to turn it off when I first get in the car. OTOH perhaps I should do the tape thing, and put up with the 3 position headlight control (manual dip, automatic matrix and main beam) which is sometimes really useful for varying lighting throw, but sometimes just can’t tell what’s going on and leaves dip beam on.
I’ve never really tracked the running costs of my car but we’ve just done a trip to Mechelen and back so I decided to track charging costs, just out of curiosity.
I’ve made no attempt to find the cheapest charging unless I’ve been presented with a choice at the point of stopping or charging overnight. Only once did the car call for a stop and that was because we carried on driving at one point because all of the charging points were full when we stopped for lunch, otherwise we just stopped for biological needs and charged at the same time.
We did a total of 1815km, charged with a total of 472kWh (including the home charge before we left minus that which was still in the car on our return).
The total cost was €141, giving a cost per km of around 8c. Google suggests that the cost per km of the nearest equivalent fossil fuel vehicle is 14-18c per km so I’m quite happy with that.
Just for comparison, if I use the blue heures creuses cost, then I’d be paying around 3c per km.
That’s economical. I’m getting a real world 660 miles on a tank full from my BMW and it’s costing about 97 euros = 1000 kilometers. It’s pretty much the same, whether autoroute or local trips. So probably 180-190 euros for me to do that trip.
