Home charging EV

They came to give us a quote and we never heard from them again! Next time we have need to our electrician will just get a reinforced plug and save ourselves €1000 or so.

That’s not good. Was it recently, Jane? From memory, we just sent photos of the outside of the house showing where the charging point would go and some measurements of how far it was from the tableau électrique. The next thing that happened was the installer turning up.

February, when we bought this house.

That IZI website is being economical with the truth . . . That is technically you can run a 7.4 Kw unit from a 9KW supply .. provided you are not using other stuff at the same time … So only one of the following .. washing machine , kettle, microwave, dishwasher , electric lawnmower . along with the TV and lights and maybe a hair dryer. .. But many electric immersion heaters 3.3KW. often used at night will.overload Linky even with all the others off

.

Are you saying that EdF don’t know what they’re doing?

Not at all. What they are saying is that if you have a 9KW cable to your house you can power a 7.4KW charge point. What They are not saying that it compromises your ability to do lots of other things … As I have the a 6 KW service ..This is something I am very conscious about..

None the less we can power our EV .. 2 KW and run a kettle 2Kw dishwasher and washing machine and vacuum cleaner and lights and TV and 2KW electric mower from that supply ..and even an immersion heater ..a special.model with 750W element by time sharing these loads.

Or using the deselectors on certain items whilst you prioritise others. Its only an abondment charge difference so no real biggy

Hi Dan1

Thank you for your very helpful advice. I have three-phase here, installed
so that I can use a pizza oven. I could buy a charge point and then search
for an electrician. I have a Kangoo electric van. I’d like to have the two
charger options in case a visitor needs a charge. Any thoughts on a make
and model would be appreciated, as I’ve no knowledge of this equipment.

Thanks again for your help.

With kind regards,

Since 2017 any charge point above 3,7kW must be installed by a professional who carries the ‘mention IRVE’ paperwork i.e. not just any electrician, but one that has provably done the training.

The minimum conductor size for a Type 2 single phase charge controller is 6mm² but 10mm² is recommended unless the run is short. There is no requirement for it to armoured, but any cabling must be installed in line with normes.

There is no need for contactor in the board, but single phase EV charge controllers must be protected via a minimum Type A différentiel (Type F to avoid some kinds of nuisance tripping), & a 6mA DC différentiel (usually provided within the charger itself).

There is no requirement for a separate emergency stop button.

Depending on the model &/or age of the Kangoo it may or may not be capable of three phase charging. Even if you only have a single phase model it might still be worth installing a three phase charger as the van will simply use one phase (& charge at one third of the speed), but you will have the capability of charging a three phase model should you acquire one, or have one visit you.

As you need this installed by a pro I would suggest you find a local correctly qualified person to recommend a make & model, & then install it.

Badger ..That may be so in France ..but in Ireland there is a requirement to have this energy stop button adjacent to the Charge point ..and they are not cheap . In Ireland all Electricians who hold their papers as registered electricians would be allowed to install and certify . There would also be a requirement to have a contactor or fuse rated for the cable in the spur

But we are in France….

Thank you .. but I cannot assist you further .. a 3 phase supply should enable you to charge at 11KW .. Moreover I don’t have experience on the type of plug your Kango has . It’s a job which does need installation by a professional . So . What I suggest is that you check up on the connectors of your Kangoos and look on line for appropriate charge points and then employ a professional electrician ..having already identified the Charge point you want.

Just to add confusion .. . The Box you put on the wall with it’s connectors is not actually a charger ..It is just a fancy connector with extras added … .The extras are all safety circuits ..as Badger’s post suggests . The chargers used to charge the EVs battery are actually built into the EV themselves and they instruct the Charge Point or Box what current to supply and when to supply it.

Did I miss the connection to Ireland? Maybe I did.

I am currently in France .. but returning to Ireland for the Winter next week … What I was describing was the officially recognised way of doing a Charge Point in Ireland ..and I cannot expect that France is more lax.
While I would have been competent to wire one myself ..I took the easy way out and decided to get a local electrician … Who decided on a completely different and better path for the spur wiring … As luck would have it he was the son of one of the lecturers in the department I used to manage .. The father , an instructor in electrical trades recognised my name and decided to accompany him … My installation was also integrated into a Solar PV system so more interesting than average ..

Not necessarily lax, just different.

So this is about your personal circumstances, nothing to do with the forum or the topic, I see. At least that clarifies the confusion somewhat.

But interesting nevertheless, don’t you agree? Certainly it made me ponder whether Scottish and Welsh protocols might differ too, but I won’t bother @Badger right now…

Bonjour

Very interesting; thank you.
